what if they think it's ok to pee in their pants?

The other day at grandma's house, dd had an accident in her panties. Her 6 mos older cousin saw & started teasing her saying, "You're icky, you're gross!" DD got really upset & started crying & saying "I'm NOT icky!" I think it really hurt her feelings. I tried to tell her she wasn't icky, but it's not nice to pee in our pants. Well, fast forward to yesterday & she had 3 accidents in a row! I don't think it's right to punish or make her feel ashamed for accidents (she's just starting pt) ..... but every time she'd tell me, "It's ok, mama, it's ok!" Like it's no big deal to pee in our pants. So what do I do??

 

I would tell her that yes, it's not the end of the world but that it's not ok. I would even use the word acceptable because she will be hearing that A LOT in her life. I don't think there is any wrong with telling her that "it's not ok". You aren't punishing her, you are just informing her of the truth.

I agree with you not to punish. I also agree with Sarah, tell her it's not ok. Say it calmly and not in anger, and say it's not ok to put potty in your pants, potty goes in the potty chair. It's ucky in your pants. If you stay calm and treat it like you do any other rule, like toys go here, food stays on the table, potty goes in the potty chair, she won't think anything of it except that it's another rule.

 

If she is comfortable in wet pants, I would say she really isn't ready for training. I know with Jon, once he started to be uncomfortable, he was done. Until he started to care, it really was an exercise in frustration for both of us.
