What foods do you still avoid for 13 month olds?

My babes are 13 months old and good eaters for the most part. I have a 3 year old, but for some reason, I can't remember when we can introduce the taboo foods like strawberries, peanut butter and shell fish. Can you ladies help me out? I know I should just call the doctor, but I much prefer the practical advice from mothers who have been there and done that.

Thanks so much for the tips!

The general advice is to wait as long as possible for peanut butter, the rest can be introduced after one year if there is no history of allergies. However, our allergist told us if there are no food allergies in your families (your and DH's,and sibs), you can introduce all of it, even peanut butter, after 1 year. Our oldest son had peanut butter before he was 1 due to a MIL not listening and he was fine, thankfully. One of our Pedi's said you can always try a "skin test" of your own by placing some of the food in question on a cloth bandaid (if they don't react to bandaids) and see if the skin breaks out. It's completely non-medical and probably doesn't work for most things, but he says the big ones like milk, peanut butter and the like will usually cause skin to break out if there is an allergy. He did this with his daughter who had a milk protein allergy and it worked for them. I am not recommmending it, but I guess it can't hurt. Hope that helps.

a word about strawberrys, i found it odd that Gerber 2nd & 3rd foods had banana/strawberry, apple/strawberry, well not thinking it was a problem I gave them to my boys at 11 months....They got the most horrible bloody diaper rash, it took forever to clear up! ttraced it back to strawberries.....I.m not planning on them having those for a long time to come! Not that you would necessarily have a problem.... just thought i'd share :)

I did what the pp mentioned ... I put the peanut butter on their wrist first and waited for awhile to see if it reacted. then a small bit on their lip. good thing... no allergies here.

I think as long as there's no history of food allergies, you should be clear on PB and berries.

We have a family history of shellfish allergies, so we're holding back on that one until they're 2 (which is really no big deal, my husband hates all fish and I don't eat it very often.) I figure by then their bodies will give me either a definite reaction (and we'll have benedryl ready at the get go) or it'll all be good.

We restricted nothing @ that age, but had no family history reason to do so.

I think it depends on your family individually.

My boys have had peanut butter, strawberries, lobster, shrimp, etc. Luckily-we have no allergies to any of these foods on either side of the family(my nephew is allergic to cashews however). I would talk with your pedi about those foods because when we went and saw our pedi-the advice about waiting on those foods-changed! I believe this was their 9 month appointment(as we were going to Italy and I wanted to know what was off limits, etc). He said nothing-they could have anything, provided we were not allergic to it.

The whole allergy debate is constantly changing-so you'd be best to ask your pedi first! Good luck and have fun! It does open a whole new world to food! :)

We don't restrict anything, but we have no family history of allergies. I don't know that they have had shellfish though just because the opportunity hasn't come up lately, but they had strawberries and peanut butter before 1 year.

The word is that waiting doesn't really help anymore... Apparently places that give peanut stuff to babies much younger than 1 have much less allergies than here. So who knows!

For strawberries in baby food, apparently it's cooked and processed so the allergens are gone (I think it's what beech nut has on their website). I've used them, and strawberry yogurts, since 8 months without any problem.

I always found that strange too!

My two were eating everything at a year, even PB.

earth first also makes an apple/blueberry puree. i've been wanting to give it to my boys but i'm waiting to ask the doc fisrt. so weird that they'd make baby foods out of things that are contraindicated before a year of age!

Our pedi says no peanut butter until 2 years. I asked about strawberries and he said, "hold off as long as you can stand it." Of course, they were given a Strawberry Newton at snack time at daycare yesterday. So far, no reaction, but we'll probably still wait awhile before trying strawberries again.

We have NO food allergies on either side here. Our pedi told us that after 8 months I could give them egg yolks so I did and guess what??!! Jack had a pretty serious reaction to it and so we had him tested and yep, allergic! The allergist also said that waiting for PB isn't going to do anything so we can give him it at anytime, she suggested starting slowly like other posters said. Thank goodness we do have an Epi Pen...just in case! I may sit in the emergency room parking lot when I give it to him for the first time...lol.

We also avoid peanut butter because of the choking hazard.

We don't avoid anything at this point (just turned one 2 weeks ago), though they haven't had any shellfish as I don't like it so don't tend to serve it.

interesting about the PB on the wrist! I had been waiting until two to give it, but after reading some more, I think we're going to introduce it soon- we're almost out of Sunbutter anyways!
