What do you use for white noise?

One of my boys sleeps pretty soundly most of the time but the other (who, ironically, was our "great sleeper" the first several weeks) tends to sleep fitfully. Thinking about trying white noise. I want to give it a try but don't want to spend a lot on a white noise machine in case it doesn't help. What do you all use? And did you just use it from the beginning? If not, did it really seem to make a big difference once you started?

One reason I've been hesitant to try it is b/c I don't want my boys to grow dependent on it and have a hard time falling asleep without it (especially if we are traveling, later in life, etc.). Have any of you had a hard time "weaning" your babies from white noise? Or do you think the need for it is something they can outgrow?

I have this from Homedics in their room. I didnt add it until about 6 months ago. We were just using the ceiling fan for white noise. I can tell you that they sleep longer for naps and wake up later in the morning since we added it. I have forgotten a few times to turn it on and they still are able to fall asleep without it. However, I have no problem packing it up when we travel. It really helps to dull out extra noise in a hotel or our family's house who are not used to having sleeping babies upstairs. I highly recommend it.

I didnt start mine until 2.5 months. I did put the sleep slumber bear in with them before that.....it played heart sounds. Someone bought my white noice machine for me, its awesome!! She got it from Bed bath and Beyond. It was only $20.00. It is actually really cool if you can get to that store or get it online. I believe its by Homedics. It plays 3 different kinds of white noice (ocean, rain, and something else), it also plays 3 different songs (twinkle twinkle, rock y bye), and it has a projection screen that moves on the wall. It also has a timer on it so you could set it to turn off at a certain time.

I have not tried weaning them off, I still use it. I definitly like mine and I think they do to. I have heard when you decide to stop you just play it lower and lower until they don't even hear it anymore.

    Hope this helps.

We use an air purifier in one room and a fan in another. Our kids are so active and destructive we have to replace often and cheaply.

I had one similar to Rachel's. It was also by Homedics. I think they make about a million models! Anyway, we used it for about 22 months, and then Jake started climbing out of his crib, so I couldn't have anything plugged in anymore. I was worried, but they did fine without it.

we started using ours when the girls were 3.5 months old. i found that the biggest help was in masking noises from outside their room that would normally startle them awake (our living area & the bedrooms are all on the same floor). we keep the volume quite low, so when (if!) we decide to wean them off of it, i don't think it will be terribly difficult. also, ours is light weight & takes batteries so when we do travel we take it with us.

this is the one we have (which is discontinued now), but that website sells several other options - just search "sound therapy". GL!

We've used a fan or a humidifier. When they were tiny, they went to sleep with some crib music on and shut off after 5 minutes.

I use a cd of Vangelis music (Chariots of Fire etc). Works like a charm and I keep a spare cd in the car just in case. I started listening to it during my pregnancy so they got used to hearing it and now as soon as I put it on they are out!
    I swear by it.

that's the one we have. word of advice: keep the receipt. we went through 3 of these before we found one that would actually stay on. cheap components, the power/volume knob kept crapping out on us.

the boys sleep better, both throughout the night and during naps, with the white noise machine. they've napped plenty of times without it, and obviously don't have a white noise machine at daycare. it just helps them stay down in deeper sleep longer, in our experience. it also masks environmental noise in the rest of the house. it's also helped "normalize" environments when we're away from home. we went to visit family in texas for christmas and we were able to put them down wherever we were staying because the white noise machine made the environment familiar-ish.

I have a ceiling fan going on low in their room (only to decrease the chance of SIDS though). We also have a CD player on one of the cribs. It runs through about 10 songs and then they are very much asleep. It's small enough that we just take it with us when we travel. I didn't want mine to be dependent on something that I couldn't easily travel with.

In the beginning we used a lullaby CD. Later we put a clock/radio in their room and just turned it to AM static. I have also used the humidifier for white noise too.

Someone gave us their hand me down graco little einsteins swing. I LOVE IT. It has cool classical songs, white noise, ocean sounds, heartbeat, jungle/waterfall sounds. The best ever. Also use a humidifier.

My Joel was having a hard time with naps and now I just put him in the swing and turn on the sound and he stops crying and goes down. Best gift ever.

We love our noise-maker. However, we went a different route than other posters.
I don't like the sounds of "waves, bubbling brooks, or forest waterfalls", I wanted true white noise.

We found the MARPAC company and ordered the 980 (?); it's on their website. I guess I would
describe it as sort of a machine, humming, whooshing air sound.

They've slept fine without it. We took it to a family overnight and left it! We were without it for a week, and they slept fine.
We also like it because we assume it is blocking out a lot of noise that is going on outside of their room.

www.marpac.com and go to sound conditioners

I have been using a humidifer since they both have had colds recently. It seems to create white noise. They sleep soundly and I have been using one since mid December.

We have an inexpensive sound machine (Conair) that I found at Walmart a few years ago. (Originally got it for our pet birds to sleep to.)
We put it in the kids room around 1 or 2 months and it's been there ever since. When we travel it comes with us. They actually have a ceiling fan and humidifier in their room too, but the noise machine is on pretty loud. It drowns out any noises we make downstairs and our dog's barking.

I have no idea how or when we'll wean them from it!

I have the same machine, we got it as a gift. I've used it since birth and only use the ocean noise (sometimes the rain)... it's great! Now that my girls are a little older I put the machine on its side in the cosleeper and project the picture on the side of the sleeper and they stare at that as they fall asleep.

We have one from Homedics and one that was sold in a dept. store. The dept. store one was less expensive (although both were gifts) and both work equally well. GL!

I use a vacuum noise cd from Amazon.com and have since birth. I put it on repeat in their cd players.

I sleep w/ a fan every nite and I was not "raised on" white noise. I just discovered it in college to drown out the 'bumps' from my noisy roommate! Can't believe i EVER lived/slept w/o it!

I'm not worried about them being dependent on it. I was/am worried about them not going to sleep and being woken by random noises!!

    Don't know what I'd do w/o it!! :)

    We use this one:
    http://www2.jcpenney.com/jcp/SearchDepartm...p;hdnOnGo=false

DH and I can't sleep without the white noise and we plan to get one for our kids. It's the only one I found that doesn't sound fakey. It's just a gentle whoosh of wind type of sound. Very relaxing. It's also very small and portable. It's great and we love it!
