My DD has done this just a handful of times (4-5), 1st time I think was when she had been napping and woke up crying and I found her like this. It is hard to describe, it is like when you swallow your own saliva wrong and choke on it. She acts like she is trying to swallow hard (making that hard swallowing noise) and trying to catch her breath. It scared the crap out of me at first! She never stops breathing or anything like that and her color is always fine. I originally thought that maybe she had spit up a little (reflux) and it didn't come out of her mouth and she swallowed wrong. What do you think? She has an appt. on Frid. but seriously what are they going to do, I can guarantee she won't do it in the office, like I said she had only done it a few times. Thanks for any/all input!
does she have any congestion? they sniffle and gag alot of that does she have reflux? that can come back up and be unpleasant for them--always better to be safe then sorry thou so a trip to ped cant hurt right?
I posted almost the exact same thing a couple months ago. We're thinking it's reflux. My son has always spit up a ton from the beginning, but never acted in pain and always grew fine. So we were never advised to do anyting about it. But once he started crawling, we noticed this happening on occasion. Like choking back fluid, swallowing really hard and fast to keep from choking. It happened so few and far between that I would kind of forget about it. Assumed it was spit up he was choking on or something. Then one day he couldn't swallow fast enough and he started gagging. I called the doctor and they agreed it sounded like reflux, the acid coming back up. And that putting pressure on the stomach, by crawling around can make it worse. They prescribed zantac over the phone. I'm still a little worried, because how do they know for sure? And I don't think the medicine is doing that much. He's done it once or twice while on it, but that's probably as often as he did it before anyway. But I felt the same as you, what's taking him in going to do? They won't be able to see it happen. I would imagine we would need to see a specialist for further (invasive) testing. I want to talk to the doctor about it in person next time we go.
Hi, Both of my kiddos did that a LOT in the NICU and the doctors told me it was reflux. . . They have gotten much better (at 2 1/2 months) but it still happens on occasion. . .It is kind of scary sometimes so I know how you feel. Laura
Definitely sounds like reflux. Classic description. My DD did the same thing. Make sure you keep her upright for 30-45 minutes after meals. It may not totally solve the problem, but it'll help her. Does she seem to be in pain when this happens? Zantac would help. Just hang in there - she should outgrow it.
It sounds like reflux to me too. That acid burns so I bet it hurts her and she is reacting to that. I would mention it to the Ped. Is she still on reflux meds?
