Hi, I have fresh 1 week old boy twins. They were born at 37 weeks 1 day and have been doing great. People keep asking if they are ID or not and since they were di/di same sex twins we have now way of knowing unless we get tested. Anyway, I think they look different and others think they look alike. I was wondering if their wieghts lean towards them being id as they were born weighing nearly the same- 7lb 3oz, and 7lb 4 oz. Then by their last day in the hospital they both dropped down to exactly 6lb 9.9oz. then yesterday they had their one week check up and both wieghed exactly 7lb 10oz. Does that make it more likely that they are id? I'd post a pic to get your opinions but im no good at it. Anyway, would love to hear some feedback as to those of you that have fraternal twins that weigh the same or looked alike in the begining but grew to look different over time. Or if you have ID twins and do they weigh the same and look almost ID.
    Thanks, Nicole

I think generally they say same eye color, hair color and blood type and look similar they are probably ID. That being said, there are MANY instances of that not being the case. As for birth weight, my girls are ID, we did a genetic test to be sure. At birth Lily was 6lbs 7 oz and Mia was 5 lbs 6 oz. So obviously that doesn't say too much... They look completely different to me, but everyone else thinks they look exactly alike..

    Congrats on your boys!

My girls are frat and weighed 5lbs 6oz and 5lbs 4 oz at birth both weighed 4lbs 12oz when we took them home. Mine were di di, same blood and eye color... but that is where the similarities end!! So really DNA testing might be your only way to KNOW.

I moved your post to the First Year forum as I think that is the most appropriate place. Thanks!

My are b/g so not ID they were 2 oz different in birth and the day they came home were even the same number of grams and the nurses said that it never happens as they are smaller units than oz. Congrats

I think it's a great theory and I'd be VERY likely to think they were id also.. HOwever, my ID's were 5 oz apart at birth and 11 oz apart at 10 weeks. My fraternal twin brothers were born at the same weight and height and still are the exact same height and weight.. Frats FOR SURE!!

Congratulations on your boys :) My boys are now 4 days old and we too are wondering about if they are identical or not. They look to us and I guess everyone the same, but their weight, Dillon as of today is 5lbs and 11 oz and Lucas is 4 lbs and 10oz. Dillon is 19 inches long and Lucas is 17. If you get them tested let us know :) We do plan on testing. I know if I was a twin I would want to know.

Congrats on your new twinkies :D !

Mine are definitely fraternal (different blood types, different hair colors) but have been very close in height and weight since birth. In fact, at their 4 month check-up they were the exact same height and weight :p. So I don't think being the same size is any indication of identical or fraternal.

Congratulations on your boys and welcome to FY! My girls were 1oz different at birth and are consistently within a couple oz's of each other, but are definitely frat (different blood types and look NOTHING alike). I think if they have the same blood type and look similar, you may want to get them tested eventually.

My boys are identical but at birth weighed 5 lbs 1oz and 6 lbs 3 oz. Their last weigh in they were 13 lbs 12 oz and 14 lbs 1 oz- so they're closing the gap, but one's always been bigger than the other. I would definitely get them tested. My twin sister and I didn't know we were identical until just 2 years ago and not knowing was so frustrating. It's a question that twins get all the time... being able to answer that question with certainty has been really great! Congratulations on your twins!!!
