What do you think about the name Killian?

DH and I are not agreeing on boys names. He wants an Irish or Scottish name, Connor in particular. I want an old fashioned or traditional name like Henry. Looking at the Irish names online I came across Killian. I have never known anyone named Killian. I am considering the name but am unsure if having the word kill in it bothers me. I'd like opinions before I tell DH I'm considering it, I don't want to get his hopes up.

I think I'd rather have Connor. Patrick is also a nice name.

I like Patrick better than Connor. There are so many Connors around here. DH has 3 coworkers with sons named Connor. I don't know if that's a good reason to veto a name. I know there are a lot of girls named Lily too, but we don't personally know any like we know all these Connors.

there's Cillian Murphy - i thought for a long time his name was pronounced Sillian, but it's not, it's pronounced Killian. i actually really like the name, although i would probably choose the C spelling, even if it meant correcting pronounciation for the rest of his life. :pardon: GL Aimee!

I would be concerned that it would get shortened to the nickname of "kill". I think I'd go for Patrick too!

Thanks ladies, I guess we could always do Kilian and then at least it's not kill. I don't know, it's just not my favorite. I like Braden but his brother just had a baby and named it Brennan, I think that's too similar. Maybe I will see what he thinks of Aiden but again, it's so popular.

I'm stuck on Henry and Emmett.

I also would not like it being shortened to Kil.

The Irish names in DHs family: Sean, Kevin, Patrick, Brendan, Brennan, Liam, Connor. Oh and Seamus of course! I almost forgot!

I do like Henry and Emmet. I like Owen too. If you like Aiden but Dh does not, maybe Ethan.

I just saw on the site that Trish linked that Emmet is listed! His concern is that everyone will think of the football player Emmit Smith.

I am going to try showing him that site and see if that sways him toward the name. I'd be fine with Connor as a middle name.

My sister's BIL's name is Killian, and he's never been called Kill. And, plenty spell it with a 'C.' I've also always liked the name Kean.

    Good luck!

All this time I thought it was pronounced See-mus. I had no idea it sounded like shay-mus until reading on that linked site. That is a nice name.

I wouldn't mind if people called him Killy, it's sort of like Kelly.

Amy-I like it! (names do tend to get shortened so that would be my only concern.)
You guys will agree on one, dont worry!!

Oh and on the list above-I like Liam (its Irish).

Well my DS2 is Killian, so i love the name!! My DH is irish and Ds1 and DS2 were born in ireland, Killian is very common over there but mostly with the spelling starting with a "C", we chose with a "K" as it is more masculine.
He has never ever been called "kill", it is a strong name that stands out, my DS2 has the perfect personnality for it. Everybody loves his name (so far) and i like that it is unusual and he is the only one in the school with this name.

I'm a little "meh" on Killian...it sounds more like a last name to me (maybe that is because I knew someone with that last name)...I do really like Emmett, Patrick, Henry, Connor and someone up thread suggest Cillian (like the actor) and I think if you were going for Killian, I would go for the c-spelling.
I hope you and hubby can come to an agreement soon!

I like Killian, but it does make me think of beer!

I really, really like Henry and Emmett. It seems that a lot of the Irish names are really popular right now, but so is Henry - at least around here.

Most people in our area are not going with the older names, with the exception of boys being named after their dads. Apparently most boys here named Henry go by Hank, but I'd want him to go by Henry. I'm sure there are people who are naming old names, just no one that we know personally and none of my ILs used old names so I like that it's unique to our family since there are so many grandchildren now.

Yeah...I struggled with this name when Dh suggested it. It took me a long time to be good with it. The day or two following his birth, the picture person came into our room to take their newborn picture and she called him See-mus. I thought, this guy is going to be correcting a lot of people in his life! I have heard of a handful of Seamus' since he has been born.

I told DH about this thread and he thought I'd get a lot of responses about the football player if I mentioned the name Emmett. I told him that not a single person said anything about the football player, but he's just not loving Emmett and he really dislikes Henry. I guess we're going to have to just wait until the baby is born and that really bums me out b/c I'd like to start thinking of him with his name right now. He isn't crazy about Killian either. :pardon: I'm going to send him the link to the site Trish posted but stop talking about it b/c we just don't agree on boys names.

    Love Killian!

I have an Owen and a Colin, b/c that's as Irish as my DH would agree to... I also like Seamus, or Shay, Liam, Conor.

My favorite Irish name is Declan. But anything really Irish like that wouldn't go well with Amelia and Lily (beautiful old, classic names). How about Jameson?

I would google "irish writers" b/c I think Emmett and Henry sound poetic or literary. Maybe you'd find another along those lines that is Irish that you both like!

I was totally wrong about what he likes. I guess his name and his brother's names are all Scottish origin, and he wants a Scottish name, which is not the same as an Irish name? :unknw: He says it's not the same anyway.

I think at this point we just want any name that we both like.

The name Kilian is popular over here in Germany, too, but it's spelled with only one L.
Maybe you could consider spelling it like this, as it wouldn't change the english pronounciation, but wouldn't seem so "violent" either.
