What do you put on cuts, scrapes, etc?

Syd got cut on a glass a few wks ago. Babysitter thought it was a good idea to let them help her unload the dishwasher.

DH freaks out about booboos. But especially cuts on the face. I'm more laid back about it. Kids are going to have tons of bruises, booboos, possibly scars, etc.

Anyway, this cut was right below one of her nostrils. It's not big, but it didn't heal well. She might have a scar. DH got into a big fight w/ me this morning about it. Besides the fact that he needs to deal with his own issues about this.......

What do you put on cuts? ointments? (I don't like putting things like that on them bcuz it ends up in their mouths one way or another).

Do you worry about them getting the ointment in their mouths? Which ones are safe? Does anyone else freak out about this?

They'll touch the ointment then put their hand in their mouth. It's not like the ointment actually stays where it should. And we haven't had much success w/ bandaids.

I use Cortaid Ointment (not cream) for nearly all cuts. You can usually find a generic, store brand for much less (1% hydrocortisone oitnment . I have used this for YEARS during the winter to help heal dry, chapped lips (a tip from my dermatologist). I swear by it.

Technically, it's for itching, but I've found that it works great on all cuts.

Ditto. You could use a litte peroxide on a q-tip and go over the cut with it and the Neosporin on top.

We use Neosporin or just a generic antibiotic ointment that's like it.

I make sure I clean it out, usually with hydrogen peroxide, or water if that's not available. Depending on the severity of the cut/scrape, I use Neosporin and a bandage.

If it's like a scrape from outside where it might have gotten all germy, I put Neosporin and a band-aid on it. For something like what Syd got in an awkward place where you can't really put on a band-aid, there's not much you can do except make sure it's clean. Putting ointment on it isn't going to prevent a scar.

I use Essential oil of Lavender.
I clean with hydrogen peroxide, then if it's in a place that will take a band-aid, I put a drop of essential oil of lavender on the pad part of the bandage and put it on the cut/scrape. If I can't put a band-aid on it I put the drop of essential oil on a q-tip and hold it there for a minute (or as long as I can keep the child sitting there). It helps healing, skin-regeneration (which will reduce the risk of a scar), is anti-bacterial and is calming so it helps if they are scarred or crying.

I acutally use A&D ointment on scrapes and small cuts - it usually heals them very quickly!

Hydrocortisone is a steroid which suppresses the immune system and may increase the risk of infection. It's good for inflamed areas but it's not something I would use on a cut or scrape. Any ointment will help to keep the cut from drying out and getting irritated. I use Aquaphor on cuts and scrapes that look raw but I don't tend to treat a cut with antibiotic ointment unless it's in a place that is hard to keep clean (like on a foot or in the diaper area). I do make sure the cut gets washed well with soap and water.

I use Bactroban because when I was BFing they said it was safe to leave on my nipples, so I figure if they ingest a little now, it's still safe.

Hydrocortisone is for itching and inflammation, not cuts.

I put Neosporin on cuts and scrapes if the kids complain about them. After I make sure that the cut or scrape is clean, I usually don't put a band-aid unless they beg for it or if it is bleeding.

I don't worry about them ingesting the ointment... and if it stays on for a few seconds, then it's probably absorbed into the skin enough.

If a cut bleeds for a long time or is deep, go to the doc... maybe stitches are required and this can be done by a plastic surgeon so as to reduce the chance of an ugly scar.

Noam fell at the playground around age 2 years. His lip was bleeding and took a long time to stop. It seemed a bit deep and I took him to his doc, who referred us to the Children's hospital for stitches by a plastic surgeon.

What are your dh's issues with cuts?

Aquaphor, morning/noon/afternooon/evening/bedtime. My son had surgery on his nose at age 2, the dermatologist recommended aquaphor (it doesn't say derm recommended on the bottle for nothing) but warned me his nose would be ugly, yes he said ugly, for at least the first year and he would have a scar forever but I could reduce the severity with the aquaphor. I was religious about it, Kyle would even remind me if I didn't do it at the normal point in the day (breakfast, lunch, nap, dinner, bedime). After a few months it was not even close to ugly and after a year even mommy's eyes couldn't see it anymore. I highly recommend it, years later I still can't see where the spot was unless I really really really try and as you know mommy's see everything.

Sorry about the boo boo but honestly, I can not praise the aquaphor enough.
