my girls and i spent the night at my parents' house this week, and i noticed that the girls are just entirely too tall for the pnp's now. they're still in cribs at home, so i can't put them in a bed there, yet ... i was thinking of getting a full size air mattress for the girls to share when they are sleeping at my parents' house (or IL's house, etc), and wrapping the play yard around it. do you think this is doable? has anyone done it?

I have never done it, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

I would just be worried that it'd lose air during the night. If they're not totally firm, they can be a suffocation hazard.

That is an interesting idea! I would have never thought of it. Sounds like it could work and as long as the air mattress is in good shape and doesn't have a hole in it, I wouldn't think it should lose air.

We just took our queen one on a trip to use in the hotel room. I was afraid they would fall off the bed otherwise. They slept on it fine.

Sounds fine to me. The only thing is, if your girls are that tall, they may be able to scale the play yard if they get a 9-inch boost from an air mattress.

I think an air mattress is fine, however, I might worry about the playyard being wrapped around it. It seems like they could become entrapped between the mattress and playyard easily? I guess it would depend on how it was set up. Personally, I would probably just put a mattress on the floor, baby proof the room, and put a gate on the door.

:good: That's what I would do. Also, before they fall asleep they might just push down the gate thinking it's a fun game. :pardon: (I know that's what I would do  )

We use two single air mattresses for the kids when we travel and they work great. I thought having them share one larger air mattress would lead to lots of playing at bedtime or fighting over who slept on what side or that someone is crowding them, so we went with two singles.

I think it would be fine too. I also vote for skip the play yard and just make sure the room is babyproofed.

I agree - I'd probably try to skip the play yard if possible. We use the Pea Pod tents when we travel, and they have mini air mattresses in them, so I don't really think the mattress part would be a problem. Good thinking!

We used an Aerobed for kids when we visited my friend for a week this summer, and the kids loved it. Granted, it was partly the novelty factor, but they actually argued over who got the air mattress and who had to sleep in the real bed.

I would also skip the play yard and just babyproof the room/area. The nice thing about the Aerobed is that it has kind of a raised edge so it's harder to roll off -- but at that age, I'm sure my kids would have managed to roll off it anyway, so you might want to put some pillows or folded blankets around it. Sarah slept on a crib mattress on the floor when we visited my parents at 23 months, and she rolled everywhere -- under the bed, alongside the radiator (it wasn't on), etc.

ETA: Just as an aside, though, how tall are your kids? Amy used the PNP for naps (and occasionally at night) until she was 3. My kiddos are on the short side, though.

My girls sleep on air mattresses now when we travel and they work out great. Target has some very sturdy ones around $20 and I think I got the air pump for about $15.

Since they are still in beds, I would definitely try it out at home first. Maybe you can do it for naps to get them used to it before you trust them to sleep on them in a different house.

My girls spend the night at MIL house often. We use a queen size air mattress for P and P, Chloe has a single. This has worked out great for the last year. We are able to fit both beds in MIL's room so she is with the girls all night. We have not had any problems at all. When we camp or go to the cabin the we also take a queen size air mattress for the kids. We use the single lift air mattress, not the high mattress, so if they fall off it is an easy roll!!!

thanks, everyone for your input! the question now, and some have brought up, is should i get one big one to share, or two singles? they're not used to sharing a bed, but i figure if the mattress is for sleeping elsewhere, they can have sort of a "slumber party" together (let grandma take care of it ;) )

i haven't had my girls' 2 year appt yet, but i think they're about 3 feet tall... i don't know if we just had the smaller pnp's or what, but their toes were curled up and their heads were sort of popping out of hte net lol

    Hello.
We went on our first family vacation last month to my MIL.

She borrowed a queen size air matress for the girls to share so we tried to nap them on it the day we arrived.

They thought it was a BOUNCY and would not lay down having way too much fun jumping.
It came down very fast and we will not be trying that again!!

    Good Luck!
    Leslie
