How do you guys give the Zantac to your babies?? We started off with squirting it in there mouth and then sticking the bottle in right after but they still spat it out some times. We now are just putting it in their bottle. I don't know if anyone else does this or if your even suppose to but now that we have been doing that their reflux seems to be a lot better.
We always gave Zantac in about 20 cc's of EBM or formula. We would give it right before their bottle. This way you're sure they get the whole dose. And...this is the way it was done in the NICU...so I'm sure it's OK to give it this way. Cary
My boys werent on it for long before we switched meds, but I just used a syringe and gave it to them without mixing it in anything.
Like PP, we just add it to a small amount of formula in a separate bottle (one from the NICU) before their regular bottle. We add all meds to this bottle (vitamins, milk of magnesia) and they generally take it without complaint. Good luck. . .I hope the Zantac helps!
We just used the little syringe and put it right into their mouths. They never spit it out though so if that is the problem you are having, I think if you put it in a little formula/Bm that would be good so you know they will finish it. GL! Zantac worked really well for us so I hope you have the same experience.
We just squirted it quickly into the back of thier mouth next to their cheek and then followed with the bottle. They became very good at taking it. The nurse told me that if you are going to give it in the bottle then you need to put just an ounce of milk/formula with the med and let them finish it then give them the rest of the formula. If you mix it in a whole bottle and they don't drink the last ounce then they are not getting all the meds. I say keep at the dropper attempt. If they spit a little bit out then so be it. They will eventually get used to the taste and stop spitting it out. I swear my girls have always been great with taking meds and I think it's because they just got used to having no choice but to take it. I think I also use to have them cradled when I have the meds. If they are sitting up straight it's easier for the meds to come right back out.
The syringe never worked for my guys. They would just spit it right back out. I just put the proper dosage in a nipple and they would suck it right down.
Thanks guys. They have been on it now for over 2 months. It wasn't doing much at first because they spat most of it out but now that we put it in the formula they seem to be a lot better. I'm glad to know some of you do this as well. I do use two bottles sometimes when I don't know if they will finish it or not but if they are really hungry I give it to them in their full bottle.
