so i want to start finger painting. my oldest loves to paint and with just one it is easy to keep him clean. the twins are now getting interested so i want them to start painting but what can i do to keep them from getting the paint all over them. i think i need to buy or make some kind of smocks but have NO IDEA where or how. any ideas would be great!!!

My SD is now 10 and I have not attempted with the boys yet but we had a cloth apron we used for my SD when she was 2 and up, I have no idea where it was bought but it was just an adjustable apron and fit her all the way up til 5/6 when she no longer needed it to stay clean. I would try walmart, target somewhere along those lines.

For painting (or any craft project that will make a mess, or plah doh) my girls have a big t shirt that they wear. It's about 2 or 3 sizes to big when they started to wear it, now it just about fits them. Then they wear old pants so if they get stained it doesn't matter. When they are done with their crafts the shirts get washed and they put on a clean shirt or take a bath depending on how messy they got. My son also just got his first big t shirt too for his crafts that we are starting with him.

Sorry I couldn't resist. You can get aprons at TRU or a teacher supply store like Lakeshore or Discount School Supply. Like PP said a large t shirt works great too.

I bought art smocks for them but I'm not loving that I have to special wash them and the elastic is a little tight on their wrists so I am going to do what I did when teaching kindergarten and the kids painted at the easel. I am going to buy my girls t-shirts that are 2 or 3 sizes bigger than what they wear. That way I can throw it on top of whatever they are wearing and throw it in the wash. Of course I only will use washable paints so I don't worry about it getting mixed up with the laundry. I just find it's not worth the money to buy a special art smock. I will find the cheapest t-shirts I can at walmart or target or the dollar store if they have. HTH

Most of the stuff is totally washable. I (have always) just let them wear their clothes and if they need to change they change. I guess we started playing with paint a lot around 18 months.

We use what used to be one of DH's white undershirts.
