What do they wear in the wading pool?

We have a little wading pool out back, soon to be replace by one of those ginormous deluxe-with-sprinklers-and-a-slide wading pools, and I can't figure out what kind of diaper to put on them. Swim diapers seem way too expensive if we're going out there once or twice a day (it's 96 today, with a heat index of 105). But their naked little bottoms, while super cute, make me anxious about having to clean poop out of the pool. I'm not sure if it's the hygiene or the trouble of cleaning that's bothering me more...

    So what do you do?

they have reuseable diapers from one step ahead that you can out on them. i just ordered 4 of them 2 for each. they are supposed to be better then the little swimmers. i was thinking of just using that and maybe just putting a tank top on DD but Ds can just wear that. HTH

Since the Lil Swimmers don't really hold the urine, they only contain the poop, I would think that a snug pair of training pants would probably do the same.

Enjoy your fancy, dancy new pool :)

We've been using the disposable swim diapers. YUCK! Why is it that babies always poop while their in the water! I like the idea of the reusables. And I think Babies-R-Us carries them in the store.
BTW, isn't this heat and humidity horrible!!!!! We never got this hot last summer in August! Gotta love the crazy Virginia weather! B)

The reusable swim diapers sound like a great idea.

I am currently using the Lil Swimmers, or whatever they're called, from Huggies. I just had to deal with my first pool-wet poo diaper and I almost puked. It was everywhere...but inside the diaper, thank goodness.

    I'd go for the resusables.

I got reusables at Target when mine were little. They were with the hats and sunglasses in the baby area. HTH :)

I use the swim diapers. Sometimes I put them in their bathing suits, sometimes just a swim diaper and a t-shirt.

These responses really helped jump start some ideas! Thank you!

Since I wasn't going to put the boys in a disgustingly hot car today, we improvised with a couple of bum genius diapers I had bought to try out. They worked great at keeping things in..including about a quart of water each. Made me think they'd work pretty well as actual diapers!

Nini, it really is disgusting around here -- the wading pool is going to save my sanity this summer.

I use swim diapers sparingly...They do not hold pee. So I think....when was the last time the pooped and when do I expect the next one. If I think they might poop I put one on if they already pooped that day I do not. Trying to use as few as possible. I have been looking for the washable reusable ones but have not seen them at my local stores.

    Reusable?

    I might look into those.

Does that mean they hold the pee in, too?

I did naked swimming and it was great until DD decided to get out and run around the yard. Then DS tried to go down the slide naked. OUCH!!!

I'm not sure I understand these "reusable" swimmies...does that mean if they poop in them you have to clean them out and then wash them? I'd rather just throw away the diaper if there is poop in it. I think I would gag more if I had to clean it out and actually have to put the dirty thing in my washer! EWW

You can rinse, dry and reuse swim diapers. Sometimes they end up smelling like pee and in that case I throw them out, or if the kid poops in them I throw them out, but otherwise I dry and reuse.

I also have cloth swim diapers from Target. I think Walmart also has them. If the kid poops it's kinda like a cloth diaper although it will hold in the poop in the water. You have to clean it as you would a cloth diaper (put poop in toilet and wash diaper). It's nice to have something you only have to buy once and you can wash and reuse.

Rubber pants over the diaper work ok. We've done that a few times. Lately though I've been letting my girls go naked in the kiddie pool. It's so much easier and we haven't had any poop accidents. If we have one I'll just clean it up, although our kiddie pool is really small so it's easy to empty and clean out. If I had a bigger pool like you I'd probably want a diaper on them. HTH!

Reuseable swim diapers. I bought mine from Kidsurplus.com for like $5 each. Mine have never pooped in them (then again, we hardly ever go swimming), but yes, you'd just rinse the poop out into the toilet and then wash the diapers. Doesn't seem like a big deal to me, at least no worse than changing a yucky diaper.

Zebeta, I can't believe how awful it really is right now!!! I don't ever remember a spring like this, and I was born here. I'm blad your bum genius' worked. I tired the boys in our little wading pool but they just want to get in and out (head first). LOL I'm hoping they will like our big pool. I'm assuming we will be there often this summer. There's a storm coming in, better go put the pool in the garage.

Recently, I have just let them go in with what they have on and change them after. I don't always have swim diaper or time to change them!

I am right there with you VA ladies! I live in Manassas and was born and raised in Alexandria. I have never had a problem with the heat but this year it is just already unbearable. Plus to top it off our air conditioning has been broken for the past 4 days.
Anyway thanks for the question. I too have been struggling with this. Those throw aways are way too expensive. I will head out to Target today and purchase the reusable. Also glad to know that you can rinse out the swimmies and reuse them too. When you have 2 kids going through them they really can add up!

I do put them in a swim diaper most of the time, mostly because there are usually lots of neighborhood kids out there with us. If it was just us, I would probably skip it! I might try the reusables, since the Little Swimmers are so expensive!
