Ok, so i've read a lot about BH contractions, but I am having a lot of trouble really understanding what they are supposed to feel like. This is my first pregnancy and I just don't have a point of reference. As a result, I have no idea if i have had any yet, and if not, I don't know that I'd recognize them when I finally do. Can anyone describe what BH feel like? How will i know that I'm feeling them? Where will I feel them? how do they compare to round ligament pains (which i've had and can recognize)?

    TIA!

For me, the BH started off not painful. Not even uncomfortable, just wierd. My whole bellly would tighten up and then relax again. It wasn't until the end with my singles and about 28 to 30 weeks with my twins that they became uncomfortable. The last few weeks with the twins they really did hurt. To the point that when they became regular the night before I delivered I didn't realize til the next day that they were in fact labor contractions! And it was my fourth pregnancy! [IMG] hth

I was having them for over a month and didn't know it- to me it looked like both babies were pushing themselves out in little tight balls against my belly skin and then would relax. I started getting them sometime in Jan so that've been around 22ish weeks? Now I'm getting them much more regularly (which the drs aren't too keen about...) and the tightening is getting much more uncomfortable. RL pains are closer to a pulled muscle or almost a gas pain for me- and it's in one specific spot- these cover almost your entire belly. HTH! [IMG]

I am also a first time mom and had never felt BH before. I was always concerned that I was missing something and finally started asking around because I didn't want to have PTL and not know it. The best emplaination I got and te one that has proven most useful as my BH have never been painful was that if it is a BH your uterus will feel hard to the touch like the bridge of your nose all over while regularly your uterus should fell firm but have some give like the tip of your nose. I walked around for weeks feeling my tummy and nose (sometimes at the same time) until I could differentiate it. I must have looked silly, but it did help me alot. I hope it helps you as well.

this is my second pregnancy, and I've never felt them! I never had a single one with my ds, and I'm 29 weeks today and still haven't had one that I know of...so clearly I'm no help--but I just wanted to let you know I think it's normal if you don't have them. at least I hope!......

I had them from about 18 weeks on...ALOT! Like pp said, it is a tightening and relaxing. You can feel it on the inside and when you touch with your hand on the outside. Mine never hurt at all. Stephanie

with my son I didn't really notice them until the last month. When I did notice them I didn't feel them though! I was laying on the couch watching TV & realized that my belly was up to something. I held my hand on it for a few minutes & could just tell that they were contractions. My whole stomach got rock hard all the sudden, then after a few it was normal. This went on ever 2 minutes for over an hour that night... but I never really noticed any more until I actually went into labor!

THANK YOU LADIES!!!! Based on your descriptions, I am pretty confident that I have had some of these already. Now that I realize it, I can keep better track of when they are coming and how frequently. Thank you!

hi, this is my first pregnancy too and i had logged in today to ask the same question. though my stomach tightens up with the babies jabbing different parts of their bodies, i am still not sure if i am experiencing BH.

how long (as in minutes) do they last?

infact i had been asking people what contractions feel like as i feel a wave of pain every now and then. but from what my doc told me (that the pain starts from your back to your abdomen and then travels down) i would experience, these arent contractions. i guess they are general pregnancy aches and pains.

    any ideas?

For me, they've felt like pressure and tightening over the front of my uterus. Sometimes I can feel them in my back as well. It's not painful so much as uncomfortable. With the twins, my uterus would often tighten and feel hard to the touch but I didn't really feel it at all.
