What do babies wear in the summer months?

Sounds like a silly and obvious question but I am a bit confused. I am asking for two reasons a) for our two girls and B) because I bought some outfits for a friend who just had a baby last week.

I can pretty much figure out what to put them in when we are outside when it is warm but I am a bit confused about inside the house with air conditioning and at night. My DH likes it pretty cool in the house (he grew up in England, can't stand when it gets too hot etc). Right now, for bedtime, the girls wear a short sleeved diaper shirt, a long sleeved sleeper and their sleeveless sleeping bag and they are not too hot at all. What about when we put the air conditioning on? Are long sleeved sleepers too much? As for the long sleeved sleepers, this is what we bought our friend who just had a baby and now I am thinking maybe that was silly to buy for the summer months (we bought 3-6 month sleepers for her baby).

One of my friends told me once to put the babies in one layer more than what we would wear which I thought was great advice. So, I am thinking that the long sleeved sleepers wouldn't be too much.

Sorry for the ramble. ;) Any thoughts?

My husband tends to freeze us with the air conditioning at night, so I put the babies in warm jammies year-round. I think it just depends on how cool you keep your house. I don't think that the long-sleeves would be too much for the newborn though.

we have window units so it isn't central air and in the hottest part of summer even with A/C and a fan my kids were miserable so they spent most of the summer in onesies and if we were going to a mall or someplace with central air then I'd put socks on them...they slept in a cotton footed sleeper - my kids don't like hot and if I dressed them with 3 layers they'd never sleep!

I was wondering the same thing. My pedi suggests one more layer than you. I notice my girls tend to get hot - just like us so I bought some jammies from Carter's that have short sleeve t's and either short or pant jammy bottoms.

even in houston (read as hot and humid), our boys slept in long sleeve sleepers at night with a onesie under. We kept our house coolish and would run a fan if we needed to.

It's warm here now and I've been putting them in a long sleeved one piece sleeper at night and they seem comfortable. I think they'd be cold in onesies but too hot with the sleep sack. Last summer they were newborns and I had them in one piece long sleeved sleepers plus swaddled in receiving blankets and that's what they needed being newborns.

I think the rule of thumb (since they are not newborns anymore :( ) is that they should be wearing the same amount of layers you are wearing. If you are comfortable in a short sleeve shirt then they probably will be too. Their bodies can now regulate temperatures normally. If you find you are a bit chilly in your house with just a short sleeve and put another layer on, chances are they are feeling the same way. I used to thing that they were cold based on their feet and fingers and nose but just like us, the extremities will often get cold. You can always tell how their body temperature is by feeling the back of their neck.

For our first summer (they were under 5 months) I used to keep them in the long sleeve onsies and those cheap Carter pants that come in lots of colors. Or in the one piece jammies with the feet. If you tend to go out a lot, you could dress them in short sleeve onsies and put a long sleeve shirt on them for in the house. Then when you want to go out, you just have to take off the shirt and go. When you get back home just put it right back on. I always kept socks on them if they weren't in the feet jammies. HTH

We live in Phoenix and have some HOT weather coming our way. During the day, I usually keep them in onesies or those romper playsuit things from Carters. My husband also freezes us out at night, so I've been putting them in light, longsleeve sleepers.
