What could this be?

I took Avarey to the ER March 9th for a double ear infection. At that visit I notice that Avarey had about 3 white spots on her tongue and mention to the ER Dr. that it looked like thrush. Well, he said no and gave me the prescription for the ear infections and sent us on our way. Well, now 10 days later, Avarey's mouth is almost completely white with spots on her tongue, lips, roof of her mouth, and inside her cheeks, along with a diaper rash. Is this really thrush? and if so what do I need to do. Should I go back to an ER dr. that missed it in the first place tonight or wait until morning and schedule her an appt with her pedi?

Is this stuff contagious? I just bought new pacis and bottles with new nipples, and Aubrey and Avarey are taking each others bottles all the time and fighting over pacis. Should they both be treated just in case. Aubrey's mouth is completely clear and there are no signs of any white spots.

Avarey is still eating good, but is playing with her hands in her mouth almost like she is scratching her mouth. She is not complaining about the diaper rash, she is more amused than anything when I change her. But she does look as if there is something bothering her. She won't let me get a closer look unless I hold her down or get her to laugh with her mouth open.

Are there any other signs that I need to watch out for? I have done a little research about thrush and oral yeast infections, but I haven't been able to find any pictures that come close to what this looks like. It looks like milk residue all over her tonge that won't wipe off. I tried with my fingernail, a towel, and a toothbrush but none are successful.

    What do you think?
    Thanks!

I think thrush is contagious but I'm not totally sure. Could it be hand foot mouth?? That causes blisters in the mouth and some on the fingers and toes. Just throwing that out there. If she is acting fine I would go to the Ped in the morning--they see this more than an ER doc.

Yes! It sounds like thrush to me, and yes it is very contagious! I think she will need an anti-fungal to treat it, if I remember correctly. I would call the ped in the morning. I will try to find a picture...

Sounds exactly what Emma had when she was diagnosed with thrush. Our pedi told us it was contagious and we had to make sure binkies and bottles were not shared until the meds were over and then we needed to boil all nipples and binkies. She is probably uncomfortable, but I personally don't think it warrants a trip to the ER. Just call your pedi first thing.

I don't think that it could be from their feet. I usually have their feet covered while on the floor or they are in their walkers. Thanks!

Here is a picture of the white coating in the mouth/cheeks, and also a yeasty diaper rash.

I would say that it is thrush. My girls had it on and off for the first 3 months. Their tongues would be coated white and you couldn't scrape it off. It was very contagious. The ped gave me medicine and told me to go ahead and give it to both of them and definitly sterilize their paci's and bottles afterwards. Mine only got it in their mouths and it never turned into diaper rash though. After they started taking the medicine it took a few days for it to go away so if the ped gives you medicine don't be surprised if it takes a little while for it to work. Good luck and I hope your little one gets all better soon.

That sure sounds like thrush, and it's very common to get it after a course of antibiotics. Their immune systems are in better shape at 8 months, so while it IS contagious, it's possible that your other daughter may fight it off effectively. Still, try to keep the binkies and bottles separate and consider boiling everything every day.

Your ped will have good advice, but you can use an over-the-counter antifungal like lotrimin on the diaper rash (assuming it is red with raised patches and doesn't respond to regular diaper cream). You can also stick her in the sun with a bare bottom for 15 minutes...works better than anything else.

According to my lactation consultant, a lot of doctors, even pediatricians, aren't trained to recognize mild thrush. ..but it sounds like your case isn't so mild anymore anyway.

hand, foot mouth is a seperate disease not caused by the feet. YOu just get blisters on you palms, bottoms of feet and in the mouth, I think that is what Rachel was suggesting. So you could check her hands and feet as well.

Sounds like thrush to me! We battled it for MONTHS. The best treatment we found (quickest) was Gentian Violet. You can get it OTC at the drugstore. It is messy, but it works!
