What come first, sitting or crawling?

My babies are starting to try to crawl (well my son is, my daughter makes half hearted attempts, but doesn't get anywhere). However, they can't sit at all, if we sit them up and let them go, they just kind of flop over. I was telling my mom and she thought sitting came before crawling/rolling around to get to things. So I was curious, what have your experiences been?

Sitting came about 2-4 weeks before crawling with all 3 of mine. That said, all kiddos are different and do things differently. It's so fun to watch the "trying" isn't it? It really is amazing to me what they accomplish in such a short period of time.

Mine both crawled first. They didn't begin to sit well until after they had mastered crawling.

Both of my girls are sitting, one better than the other, but neither is crawling yet. Josie's been sitting well unassisted for about a month and a half. She's close to crawling but not doing it yet.

Mine did the army crawl first before sitting. Then they learned how to sit. Now they can do the real crawl with their bellies off the floor.

Sitting first. That phase lasted a while, and it was one of my favorites. They could sit up and happily play with toys, and NOT GO ANYWHERE!!!! It was bliss!

    Kate,

That sounds wonderful, I wish my babies had hit that phase first. [IMG]

    Ditto Ditto Ditto!

Although, only my DS is crawling now (army crawling). DD is trying but so far manages only to pivot...kinda like a dog chasing its tail the way she just goes in circles over and over. Very cute. They've been sitting up for a few months.

My little Gabe was crawling first. has been since about 4 months!

Nate is a sitting champ - but has not even tried crawling...well, he's rocking a little...but no big effort on his part! lol

IIRC crawling isn't considered a milestone anymore so it doens't really matter, developmentally that is.

My ds sat up before he crawled. Actually he walked before he crawled too. One of my girls can sit up, neither can crawl yet but the one that isn't sitting just might crawl first! She can get up on her elbows and knees and rock back and forth.

I one(Cooper) who has been army crawling for the past month 1/2 and about to do the real crawl. He can't sit on his own unless I sit him there and he only lasts a few seconds before he falls. I think his problem is he doesn't want to sit still! He is always on the go and will be into something before you can turn around. Trying to pull up too.

Now Eli will sit up pretty good if you put him that way(he can't get that way on his own) but you can't leave him b/c he will crash at anytime face firt. I think he has a gravit advantage, LOL, his belly is pretty big and helps his balance. Cooper is skinny as a minute and no belly(too busy moving). Eli has not crawled one bit! He just mastered rolling to his tummy and this is where his belly gets in his way b/c he ends up stuck on it(flying) and can't get his legs up or army crawl.

Mine are both about to crawl, but not close to sitting yet! I think every baby is different , so don't worry. Mine LOVE tummy time, so Im not suprised that they are closer to crawling.

Both of my girls sat about 1.5 months before crawling. Only Sierra could sit herself up from tummy position before crawling through. Ainsley was crawling for a while before she could figure out how to get in any position except for laying flat on her tummy. I had to sit her up.

Okay, dumb question... how do you get them to try and start sitting. Just prop them up and let them go? I would assume that babies would start crawling cause they wouldn't be able to lift themselves up in a sitting position from lying down, no? [IMG]

I was wondering the same thing. When I try to put them in a sitting position they just push back and kick their legs out until they are on their backs again and rolling around. I have kind of given up at this point. [IMG]

Sitting was first here! Interesting that yours have another way!!

I would give them lots of practice because your life will be easier when they can sit!!

If I remembered correctly, my girls started out crawling first.
As for sitting, i propped them up with pillows around them in case they fall which happens so many times. But after awhile, they learned to sit better.
