I am planning ahead and anticipating some constipation issues, and wondering what foods I should have on hand to help with this? I can't find prune juice where I live (I know weird, but I live in the Middle East), so am looking for other alternatives...

    Thanks!

Hello !! I'm guessing we are up at a similar time zone.... we have a fig & raisins & oats puree baby food here and it kicks @#*# , pears, paw paw, I've heard "p" fruit is good -- peaches too I think.

"Constipating foods" I think are bananas and possibly apples ?? not sure on the apples.

I'd like to know more as well...

Question about the pear juice- just like the Gerber pear juice- or should you use juice from a can or jar of pears? I know- silly question, but I have never heard of this before and would love to have some on hand as my DD has issues at times. I've only heard of using prunes or prune juice.....

We are currently dealing with constipation now and these are my pedi's recommendations:

Baby Food: Pears, Prunes, Peaches, Squash and Green Beans

    Cereal: Barley

He also recommended either mixing the baby cereal with pear juice instead of BM/Formula OR mixing 1oz pear juice with 1oz water and giving that to my babies 1 or 2x's/day. But he had different amounts of pear juice recommendations based on the babies' ages (mine are almost 7 months old).

He also said to stay away from carrots, peas, apples, and bananas for now as those are binding foods and can make the constipation worse.

Poor babies!! I feel so sorry for them. :(

My pedi said to buy the Gerber (or other baby brand) pear juice. I buy it in a 4-pack so I only have to open one at a time and I can leave the others sealed and fresh until I need them.

It seems to be working....we're on day 2 now of mixing it with their oatmeal....

The Gerber baby food prunes helps a lot. We also use karo syrup, which has also helped!

I use baby food prunes mixed with oatmeal when we have issues, but to keep things regular I offer peaches or apricots with oatmeal every morning, gets things moving for the day so to speak.

As far as the pear juice question I would think you wouldn't want to use the pear juice from the canned pears b/c it's packaged in an alumimum container which is supposedly not good. I have saved some of the cooking liquid from my homemade pears and peaches and used that in a pinch.

DD was constipated and still has issues with this... I used, graham crackers, raisin bran, white grape juice, apple juice, pear juice, wheat or whole grain bread instead of white, apples, apricots, peaches, pears, and prunes. Any food high in fiber or contains pectin, is good for digestion. Make sure they drink LOTS of water! Fiber will back up if you don't do the water thing. They make baby suppositories, which do help. Ask doctor if he has any other suggestions. Now my child is old enough, she eats the Activia yogurt. It has really helped regulate her.

Blueberries (the Gerber 2nd food packs) worked like a charm for my kids.

Figs and raisins would work really well, and shouldn't be hard to find in Abu Dhabi. Just cook the dried fruit in water until it's really soft and mash it up. You can strain the seeds and skins out if you want - kind of a pain, but you won't need more than a couple of spoonfuls to get things moving.

I used pear juice when my 3 year old was a baby. My twins stay constipated and i use Karo syrup in their bottle. Although Gracie gets a little worse and use over the counter Miralax that my DR suggested. It woks wonders. It makes them go without hurting!!

    God Bless,
    April :hug99:

For us it was Karo syrup in their formula for a long time, which we eventually switched to prune juice in their formula. Plus Gerber baby prunes. And eventually whole prunes (cut up) and other dried fruit.
