I am trying to get some new ideas. We have the Magic Tree house books #1-28, 32,33--I got them on a great sale through the Scholastic book sale last year--$1 a book!, but they have so-so interest in reading them. Marcus is into Junie B. Jones, and Jonathan has just finished the first of the Weird School books.

So, what is popular in your house?

My guys love the Bailey school kids series like these . They recently got the Santa doesn't mop floors and Abominable snowman book through scholastic book order at school, but I also have a lot of that series from when Cory was younger like Frankenstein doesn't slam hockey pucks, Zombies don't play soccer, Cyclops doesn't roller skate etc. they love them. Jacob started a Magic tree house book but really doesn't seem to care for it. Nathan likes to read the Nate the Great books, of course ;) .

Right now the bizarrely large number of Christmas books my mother has saved over the last 50 years.

They have eclectic taste and will read almost anything that suits an interest of the moment.

We just went to the library yesterday, so your timing is good! Hayden and Brady tend to choose these series most:

    Geronimo Stilton
    My Weird School
    Captain Underpants
    Star Wars

We still have Jackson's big collection of Magic Treehouse, but they haven't gotten into those quite as much yet. I'm trying to steer them toward those books, because at least they are educational. Jackson was always more into nonfiction, interested in books about presidents, insects, weather, etc. Hayden and Brady are all about comedy and science fiction. It gets a little frustrating for me, but at least they're excited about reading.

The entire saga of star wars... Episodes I-VI Decent sized chapter books covering each movie.
Magic tree house of course. anything dealing w/ history (ie presidents, wars, etc...) nature: earthquakes, weather, etc...
Bailey school kids, A to Z mysteries, and Geronimo Stilton for fun quick reads.

Funny story: 2 weeks ago during P's violin lesson, K picked up a copy of "Phantom of the Opera" and asked the violin teacher if he could borrow it. They both read it from cover to cover! I hope it was a tame version... it is an old copy, so not based on anything updated or recent.

I'm personally reading Inkheart (and The queen's fool, and Twilight) right now and all three of us just finished up w/ The Invention of Hugo Cabret... great book!

Holly will read ANYTHING she picks up. However lately its been a Jonas Brothers book she got from book orders at school. She takes it to bed with her and reads it over and over and over. SO Santa is bringing her a copy of the new Jonas Brothers book, that the boys actually had a part of writing. I'm hoping she will enjoy it. The only thing she seems to care about taking care of is books, everything else just gets thrown out.

Both of them love Andrea's old Babysitters club. But they will still read anything put in front of them, Holly more so, but Cassie is improving.

Funny story about their reading. Cassie has a The Dog Princess book, that she was reading (outloud as usual) and every time she got to a hard word, or a long word, Holly would tell her the word....FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM. Seriously she would respond with the correct word, she had actually memorized the book!

Incredibly great book!! I read it while we drove up to Mackinac Island, in one sitting, and I just kept saying to DH, "This is awesome!" Now you've inspired me to read it again!

Other than the ones you listed my older boys like Cam jensen and the baily school kids too. We also have them reading the Boxcar Children series.

I received EXCELLENT suggestions in a similar post awhile ago. Here's the post. I purchased some of the suggested books for Will for Christmas, and I really hope he likes them! I bought a Berenstein bears treasury (that I'm actually giving to either Nate or Drew, but hoping Will wants to read it!), and also a Ricky Ricotta book, along with Super Diaper Baby (a Dave Pilkey book). Oh, I also got a choose your own adventure book. I'm not sure it will be the right reading level for Will, but I think he will like it even if we read it together. Besides, I used to read those when I was young and I LOVED them! Have your boys tried the A-Z mystery series? Those are pretty good, as well, and I bought the whole series from Scholastic for a really good price.

Good luck finding some wonderful new things! I had one boy who LOVED the Magic Tree House books, but Will has no interest. It's a little trickier finding him things he will actually sit down and want to read. I don't want it to be a chore for him. I want to create a love of reading for my boys.

My boys love books by Judy Blume ( "Double Fudge", "Fudge-Mania", "Super-Fudge" and others) - these are really fun stories.

I used to love Encyclopedia Brown stories. Started a lifelong mystery passion.

Both of the boys really like Captain Underpants. Michael seems to like to read more than Isiah and Michael is now reading at 4th grade level (their in 3rd grade now). Some of the stuff they like to read is Star Wars, Judy Blume (the Fudge books...they couldn't believe that I'd read those same books before! LOL), and my Mom just bought them a couple books for Christmas: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Treasure Island, so we'll see which one of them actually reads the books. We do make them read every night, I usually have to fight with Isiah to read and he always asks if his "time" is up where Michael will happily go read.
