What are the symptoms of Gestational Diabetes?

I am going this weekend to the lab for my 1 hour test which I am dreading, I am totally uncomfortable and do not want to sit at the lab for an hour....But I just read the other post about GD and thought I better get it done ASAP. I was wondering if there's any symptoms that people watch for besides of course swelling.

 

GD isn't really all that detectable, IMO. I feel perfectly fine physically and yet I have it. I've seen fatigue mentioned as a side effect, but hello....isn't that every day with pretty much all of us? At most, when my blood sugar is "off" I might feel a little funny....just a little lightheaded and just not quite right (like if you've had too much sugar or caffeine) but that's about it. I've not heard of swelling being a symptom of GD, only pre-e.

Maybe others have experienced tell-tale symptoms, but I think only the bloodwork will tell for sure. Good luck on your labs!! And like I'm sure you've read, even if you fail the 1hr, don't despair...lots of women go on to pass the 3hr (but lets hope you just pass the 1st test and can be done with it!).

I was going to say what the pp said. I didn't have swelling but if my sugar was off I got lightheaded/dizzy, so I knew I had to eat something. I also failed my one hour test with my girls but past the 3hr one. For my son I failed both so I had GD with him.

Good luck on your test and I hope you past. The one hr test wasn't to bad I just brought something to keep myself occupied. The 3 hr test was harder.

The only sympton of GD that I had was tiredness. Like a PP mentioned, everyone, including my OB, thought I was just tired because I'm pregnant with twins and I'm a SAHM to two very active kids. It was only after I started the GD diet and felt a lot better that we realized the connection.

I believe that excessive thirst and frequenst bathroom trips can also be a sign, but again they are also signs of being pregnant.


Are the people asking about swelling confusing GD with preclampsia? With preclampsia you swell.
