What age do you start with safety scissors?

I like to do a lot of crafts with my kids. I hadn't even thought about breaking out the safety scissors until they were at least 3. But a girl my husband teaches with said that in her kids school, they start them on scissors at 18 months. This just sounds crazy to me. What age do you feel is appropriate?

My guys were just starting to use their utensils more than fingers at 18 months so no, we didn't use scissors then. I think they were about 2.5 when I bought them the smallest Fiskars WalMart had with rounded tips and all-metal blades. They were marked ages 4 & up but those are good quality scissors and they're still enjoying them. I introduced glue sticks at the same time. :good:

I think our daycare starting letting them mess around with safety scissors (closely supervised) around 18 months as well. They would use both hands and it wasn't very accurate, but they had fun! I'm pretty sure they could use them correctly by the time they were 3, so they must have been practicing for awhile by then.

We bought them when the girls were 18 months or so, but only used them with supervision and a lot of adult assistance. In the last month or two P & C have gotten much better at using scissors by themselves, although I wouldn't say they're completely proficient.

I guess we were probably closer to 3 before they could really get the hang of using the safety scissors.

We have been using the fiskers as well for a couple of months. My kids love them and we always do them together.

My girls were around 2.5 because I remember one of the girls in EI making a comment about getting them used to them before they go to PS. It didn't take long for one of my girls to get it but the other one still has trouble using them. I say go for it! :good:
