Hi. I'm very excited that we're moving back home to Canada this weekend! Yippee! My boys are almost 6 months adjusted. We bought their convertible carseats so that the ride will be more comfortable for them. It's a good 12 hour drive home plus a stop at customs! We decided to do the drive overnight. So we'll leave at 6pm (their usual bedtime) and hopefully be at my mom's by 6am. Usually they just get up once during the night for a quick feeding and then straight back to bed.

Anyone have any tips to make this drive successful? And by successful, I mean 2 sleeping babies for almost the whole trip...

    Thanks,
    Cary

    nyquil ;) j/k

I think you have it right, feed them right before you go and hopefully they will stay asleep through the night. No advice on how to keep them asleep, that's all on them.

Good luck and have a safe drive!

No real suggestions, just wanted to wish you good luck! Mine liked sleeping in the car while it was moving, so I guess my best "suggestion" would be don't stop unless you have to.

I think that is a wonderful idea to travel at night. For one there will be a lot less traffic and another your babies should sleep the whole time. We are traveling 7 hours this july and we are leaving at night too so our kids will sleep b/c my babies are miserable being in their seats all day. I hope you have a wonderful trip. You sound excited about moving!!!

Good luck with the move - how exciting to be moving closer to family!!

My only advice would be similar to a PPs - keep moving and don't stop unless you absolutely have to. Our boys will sleep forever in the car - unless we stop for a bathroom break or to go through a drive-thru - as soon as they sense the car has slowed way down or stopped they start stirring!

Hope you guys have an easy drive with sleeping babies!

Driving overnight is a great idea -- they will probably sleep most of the way and you will have less traffic and less time spent at the border. We just recently did a 7 hour drive with the babies and we started out at 7pm. Dressed the kids in pj's, gave them thier last bottles and off we went. We made great time and they slept the whole way. We are moving in a few months, too, and are planning a similar drive.

One thing that was hard about driving at night is that DH and I were both exhausted the next day. We didn't get to sleep till 2am and the babies were up at 6am as usual. Hopefully you will have some extra people around to lend a hand the next day, because you will be tired.

    Good luck with your move!

Thanks everyone! We are VERY excited about moving. My parents just did the walk-through of our house that we bought tonight (closing is tomorrow) and said the house looks great. I haven't even seen it! Can you believe that we bought a house that i haven't seen? My mom checked out all the houses that we were interested in...narrowed the field and then my DH went home and saw those ones. Then we just went ahead and bought a house! Crazy...but the boys were only 2 months adjusted and there was no one around to help and there was just no way that I could leave them for a whole weekend.

We are moving to Riverview, New Brunswick (the Maritimes). It's were I grew up and all my family is there. I just can't wait! I have lived outside of Canada for over 7 years and just can't even imagine what it'll be like to be home for good.

Anyways...thanks for your tips and advice. I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes!

That is so exciting! I'm sure the boys will be fine. You might want to plan out places you can stop if you need to.
