After a dew days stay in hospital,I have been discharged. I will now be starting twice weekly u/s, with the drs prepared to deliver from next week. My little twin weighs just over 1lb. Twin a measures just under 2lbs. A paedetrician came and spoke with me at length this morning, he and the head of MFM think I will deliver at 27 -28 weeks. He said it will become very obvious to everyone that baby b needs to be out before he puts his biggger brothers life in jeopardy.
He also said with IUGR babies, gestation is more important than size. If I could get to 28 weeks, they will still have higher risks associated with prematurity, but the majority of babies, will, in the long term, be fine.
So at the moment we are living one u/s to the next. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to respond to my earlier posts, your kind works, thoughts and positive stories mean a lot.

Sending lots of good healthy baby thoughts your way! My best friend has a 26 weeker who is now 6 yrs old and is doing fabulous. She has almost no side effects from being born too early and she even had 2 brain bleeds. She is actually reading 2 levels above her grade level.

It will be hard in the NICU but all worth it in the end. Just keep positive. Its the best thing you can do for the babies. You guys will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Kim, sometimes it is better for the babies to be out instead of in, sounds like this is the case for you. I'm assuming you've had the steroid shots? If not, please ask for them. There are many of us who have had our babies early, mine were earlier than 28 weeks (see siggy for details) and they have not effects of being premature and they have no delays at all. Please visit the NICU forum for any support you need, we have all been there. Hang in there, they can do great thing for preemies now a days.

Hugs Kim! I hope they are able to keep them in as long as is safe for everyone. I heard a stat when I was preggo that for every day they are "cooking" it is three less days in the NICU. I'll be thinking of you and hoping your little man stays strong.

Great big (((hugs))) coming your way! My friend had a 29 week premie and he is now also six and larger than his older bro and smart as the dickens. I will pray for your family, it sounds like you have a great network of Doctors working for you!

I just want you to know that I have a friend who gave birth to her identical twin girls unexpectedly at 27 weeks (she found out it was twins at 24 weeks!!!). They were small and in the NICU for two months...but they are healthy, crazy, juniors in high school now and you would never know that they ever had such a dramatic start in life! Hugs!!!

Thanks for all the quick replies! It is wonderful to hear good news stories. Summerfun I have also posted in the NICU forum, I am so glad I found this site with such a great network of people who are willling to share and support strangers.
I get my first 2 steroid shots next week.....am I right in thinking they will be in my butt?
That's interesting to hear the 1 extra day equals 3 less NICU days - I will start being more grateful for every single day now!

It's been 3 years so I can't quite remember, but I believe that is where I got mine.

    Kim:
I am in the same boat as you are. Although I am really far behind you. I have to go into the hospital at 24 weeks (I am at 20 now) and wait it out week by week. I am going to take the steroid shots starting week 25. The goal is to keep them in as long as possible with monitoring on a daily basis.

I was really, really upset at first, but then good people like the ones on this forum told me their stories, and I feel better now. I am still scared. But I know it will be OK.

I'm wishing you the best of health and the best of luck. May your babies arrive safely.

Glad they are getting the monitoring they need! Your little one will tell you and the docs when he needs to be delivered.

Just an FYI - my docs at first thought I'd be delivering at 26 weeks based on cord flow, so you never know... you may have a few weeks yet. In any case 27-28 weeks is pretty far along!

Get your steroid shots as soon as you can - yes it's in the butt and it stings for a bit, but not too bad. The upside for me was that it helped reduce some of the swelling I had and completely ended my back pain. But most importantly, it helps those baby lungs!

Keep us posted. Sending good baby growing thoughts your way...

My twins were born in August at 28 weeks. It was very scary with them being that small, but they have done awesome. They are both growing really fast and neither of them have ever had any "preemie" problems. They were only in the NICU for 6 weeks! I will be thinking about you and your babies but the Drs. can do so much for them once they are on the outside!

Thanks everyone. SO glad to hear others good news stories from babies born at 28 weeks. I know that they have a good chance of survival, it's all the other risks that go hand in hand with prematurity that also worry me.
    WaterGuzzler, glad your back!
HRM, I'd forgotten they'd said you would deliver so early. Fingers crossed I get a few more weeks too.
MaKettle, hope all goes well for you too. I don't think I've read any of your other posts - do you have a sIUGR baby too?
And BeckyLynn, hope your litte ones are doing OK and you can get past 26 weeks too.
