we were invited out by a mom's group for a walk this afternoon. now, normally i'm pretty strict about the girls' schedule for reasons i'm sure everyone here can appreciate, but it is a gorgeous day, who knows when we'll have another nice stretch of weather, and the timing fit in quite nicely with the girls' schedule, so i thought, heck, let's do it! well, it started out great - we headed off for the walk, i was enjoying chatting with the other moms & the girls were getting a kick out of being somewhere other than the living room. then after 30 minutes had passed with no signs of the group turning around to head back, i started to get a bit nervous...after 45 minutes i thought, oh crap, i'm in trouble. i let everyone know i had a great time but that i needed to head back to get the girls down for their nap. by the time i got back to the car, it was 2:00pm (the girls usually go down for their afternoon nap at 1:30pm) - they were still doing okay, so i thought maybe it would be alright. i got them home, got them changed & was about to nurse them, when all hell broke loose! it literally was like someone hit the overtired switch - they went from happy & bubbly to screeching & crocodile tears in the space of 2 seconds flat. i finally had them in their cribs by 2:45pm but it took another 30 minutes of triage soothing to get them to actually calm down enough to sleep. the poor little monkeys - i felt awful! but i did learn a couple of useful things - the girls like to be outside & they like their stroller, walks need to be SHORT, and i CAN handle two babies melting down by myself! ;)

I'm so glad you went! Even if you had to perform TRIAGE (that cracked me up!). My boys can go 40 mins max on a walk. The same thing happened to me actually the last time I went to a mom's group walk. They just kept going and going with no end in sight! My boys started fussing well before we made it back to the car and cried most of the way home (they rarely cry in the car). I learned my lesson too! Now I just walk on my own!

Oh Ive been there too! LOL! They were just letting you know that although they were hungry & tired they had enjoyed the walk! :D Im glad you were OK. It´s a times like these when I think that having one baby must be a doddle! LOL!

I admit to taking mine out despite the routine and they do cope even though they get overtired. At the age mine are it´s easy to distract them so they forget why they are crying!

Awww. Good job handling it! But I can definitely understand needing to be careful to guard babies' sleep!

Big hug! That is awesome that you had fun, they had fun AND you handled the meltdown successfully! WTG! Now that you know the breaking point, you should try to go again.
