Yesterday was a very eventful (and unexpected) day for us! Here's our birth story.

I woke up yesterday morning with some low cramps. I was also peeing every 30 minutes or so, so I was pretty sure I had a bladder infection. I called my OB's office and left a message for the nurse around 10am to see if they'd call me something in. I took DS to a doctor's appointment, came home and made lunch and then put both him and I down for a nap. All of this while having these cramps.

The nurse called me back around 130 to check on me and when I told her what was going on, she told me that my OB was out of the office but that I needed to go into L&D to get checked out. I almost didn't go because I was convinced this was just cramping from a bladder infection. But I called DH anyways and he sent my MIL over to watch DS and he came home to get me.

By the time we got to the hospital I realized that these were not just cramps....they were full blown contractions and I was having them every 2 minutes on the monitors. Thankfully my OB was at the hospital doing other surgeries so she came to check on me. They gave me a shot of terbutaline, a pill of terbutaline and a pill of procardia to stop the contractions because I'd just had lunch a couple of hours before and needed an empty stomach for the c-section. My OB admitted me to the hospital and said that ideally she'd like to get the contractions stopped until the next morning but if they wouldn't stop she'd do the surgery after 10 pm.

However...none of the drugs worked. My contractions kept coming and coming and getting stronger and stronger. By the time they got me moved upstairs I was screaming through contractions and I felt so bad but it was the only way to get through them as I'd had NO PAIN meds yet. My OB checked me when I was still in triage and I was a zero. By the time I got upstairs, which was about 15 minutes later, I was a 3. And then all of the sudden my water broke. It was literally a FLOOD, but the scary thing was that it was almost all blood. None of that "straw colored" stuff you normally see/hear. DH went to go get a nurse and they came in and checked my cervix and I was at a 5 (went from a 3 to a 5 in about 5 minutes) and I was in so much pain I couldn't even breathe.

This was when things got hairy. My OB was in a conference, but her partner was there. I'd never met her partner before and he was really pissing me off because he was moving so slow. I knew that not only had I had a previous c-section, but also that Baby A was breech. So there was no way a vaginal delivery was possible. And they kept moving so slow I was so worried they were going to have to put me to sleep. I kept telling them to HURRY it along.

They got me into the OR and did the spinal block. It was a mad mess of people running around trying to get everything prepped and done. They laid me down but never went and got DH and I was too out of it to remember to ask for him. Doc started to cut, thankfully I didn't feel a thing. I was worried because it hadn't seemed like enough time had passed.

The anesthesiologist finally allowed DH in and Ella Marie was born at 7:39 pm weighing 4 lb 5 oz and Benjamin David was born weighing 4 lb 15 oz. Both babies were taken to the NICU. Ella is doing wonderful and is not on any equipment, other than a feeding tube. She got her first feeding today of 6 ml. Benjamin is on oxygen and a CPAP and a feeding tube. He got his first feeding today as well....6ml.

We found out after the delivery that Ella had a placental abruption. Which is honestly why the OB thinks the meds didn't stop the labor....and I'm glad they didn't! We could have lost her!

Ella had a 9/9 on her Apgar and Benjamin had a 7/8.

We got kicked out of the NICU for a couple of hours while they do some training so I thought I'd update everyone while I had a few spare moments.

I'm recovering REALLY well. I was out of bed several times already today. I walked myself to the NICU, but pushed a wheelchair just in case I needed it. They gave me a "belly binder" to wear....I think it helps.

Thank you ladies for everything! See you all in the first year's forum!

Congrats on the birth of Ella and Benjamin! I had a similar scare... with an emergency C-section at 34 weeks 2 days, and my girls weighed similar weights as your two. Before you know it you'll have two little ones at home with you and their big brother. Enjoy!

First congrats on your two beautiful babies. Second, I hope they do really well and get to come home soon! Third, glad to hear you're doing alright considering the circumstances. I have had 2 c/s and both babies were in the NICU. Sometimes I think that helps our recovery better - to concentrate on someone else :)

Thank you ladies so much! We love them! I feel like I'm still stalking the message boards too much, but they have an hour and a half in the morning, afternoon, evening and overnight that they close down the NICU to visitors. Plus DH had to stay at home last night with DS so I'm here alone for about 2 more hours.

Thanks for all the kind words!
