Jason has never taken a paci and would usually get more upset when I'd offer him one. (I quit trying after a few weeks...) But just in the last week or so, I've noticed that he'll grab whatever cloth is close to him and just start chewing/sucking. He really loves to do this in the bath- he'll grab the washcloth I use to cover his boy bits and just start sucking away.
Then Thursday he was super fussy for their second nap. I decided to just try a washcloth with a wet corner. He loved it! Now when he is put down I give him a cloth of some sort- usually either a small burp cloth or washcloth. He doesn't always suck or chew on it, but he'll at least hold it in his hand.

Does anyone else have a DC that likes to chew/suck on cloth? Or is DS just super weird? ;)

(And I tried to look and see if he's maybe teething, but he hasn't let me get a real good look yet. Maybe though. And he HATES teething rings!)

I think he is just self soothing himself as if he were using it as a pacifier . I dont think its "super-wierd" at all ;) .

Maia does that, I give her frozen facecloths for teething and now she sucks on everything burp cloth, bibs, toys! The noise is funny!!

My niece has sucked on a cloth diaper since she could lift it to her mouth. They just got her to let it go at 4 years old. It was her paci. She called it her "nappy". If she needed to sleep or be comforted or was slightly out of it her nappy was always in her mouth.

    Different ways of finding comfort.

My DS Aiden sucks/chews on his "silkie". It's just a silk material cut & sewn in a square. My nieces got hooked on theirs, so as a gift, they each gave one to the boys. Conner could care less, but Aiden will NOT settle without his silkie. He also sucks his thumb, but won't do it without his silkie in hand!

Jack likes to suck on fabric, too. My favorite is when he gets ahold of a sock, 'cause he'll crawl around with it in his mouth like a dog with a chew toy.

yep, DS has a 'blankie' and he sucks/chews on that. But having said that he puts EVERYTHING in his mouth. He has a paci and he holds that and puts it in his mouth every which way. So, I don't think it's weird - on the contrary, It seems to be 'normal'. :)

When I was little I had the wierd habit of sucking on a washcloth. My mom said she would find me sucking on it wet, and couldn't figure out how I got it wet until one day she caught me dipping it in the toilet! YUCK! :)

Both of my girls loved to suck on wash cloths. My Sarah would suck on her blanket every night to go to sleep. It worried me at first because I thought she would choke, but there was nothing I could do about it but just check on her and make sure she was all right. Both girls loved the wassh cloths in the bath and would suck all the water out of them. They eventually stopped on their own, but from time to time when I wash their faces at night they will grab the cloths and suck on them. My girls never took a paci and we wouldn't allow them to suck on their fingers, so I guess that was the next best thing for them.

Joel does this too. And Roman likes to hold them. Often, when I'm feeding one, I'll give the other something fabric to hold so he won't fuss.

At my OB appt. to have my IUD inserted, I had to bring the boys because I didn't have anyone with whom to leave them. So, Roman started fussing, his blankie was in the car, I grabbed my "extra" t-shirt out of the diaper bag, handed it to him, and he stuck a sleeve in his mouth and quieted right down.

Amy developed an attachment to terrycloth drool bibs around the time she started crawling -- she would carry one around in her mouth like a dog. They've become her primary comfort objects. She does have a lovey, but it stays in the crib all the time -- she's allowed to take the bibs around the house with her. I would think the velcro closure would be uncomfortable, but I think there's something about it that she especially likes. She asks for her bibs when she's crying and needs to calm down. My only concern is that Target no longer sells the "right" kind, so our current supply has to last until she outgrows them.

Both my boys suck on wash cloths, reciving blakets, quilts really any type of fabric. They've been doing it for quite awhile now.

My DH used to rub the corners of dishtowels for comfort. I thought that was pretty odd.
