Weird ? about boys' clothes ages 3-4...

My boys are 3 and have been potty-trained for a while now (YAY) and pretty much since I started their training I've made sure they wear elastic-waist pants for easier on and off. Even then they can have problems like the waistband getting all twisted. I just want to make sure they are comfortable and independent, especially at preschool.

Everywhere we go, though, I see boys ages 3 or 4 who appear to be PTd, wearing jeans with a conventional zipper/button. When I do put my kids in their old jeans, they get so frustrated, and have ended up having accidents. So, do your boys wear "real" jeans and how do they do with the zipper/button? Should I be pushing my boys to know how to do this or is it okay that they keep wearing the easy up/down stuff?

    Thanks!

Timothy pretty much refuses to wear anything where he has to mess with a zipper or snap or button. All of his pants are elastic based and he plans to keep it that way. Some of his pants do have buttons and zippers on them, but they are adjustable elastic waist on the inside. I adjust those so that he can just pull the pants up and down. He's also a beanpole, so usually the challenge is keeping the pants up.

My boys are trained and they soemtimes wear pants/jeans w/ snaps or buttons. But they usually pull them on/off w/o bothering to snap/button-unsnap/unbutton them! LOL!

Ditto.. I have a skinny mini and he can pretty much pull his pants down without unsnapping them. OR he unsnaps them and needs help snapping them up again.

I DON'T have a skinny mini, but he still is able to do this. Or just unsnap the snap, and can then pull them down. Alot of this size jeans still has an elastic part to the band anyway.

My 6 year old still doesn't like button/snap/zip pants. He too just squeezes them down and then back up when he is done. His underwear (boxer briefs) end up in a big bundle right under his waist band. He could care less. Drives me crazy. Anyway at my 3 year olds preschool (4 year olds too) they request that we do not dress them with button/snaps because they want the kids to be independant.

We have the pull-on jeans from BabyGap that look like regular jeans. Here is a link. I noticed in the description it says button and zip fly but really they are elastic waist and pull on and off?

My boys get upset if it DOESN'T have a zipper and snap... or worse, a fake fly (the ultimate in frustration). FWIW, buttons are rare on pants for this age group although there are lots of snaps that look exactly like buttons on the outside. T&T can undo and snap a snap (or a use button, for that matter ;) ) and they love to practice but the pants also have enough elastic in them that they can be pulled down still snapped in the event of an urgent need.

My boys are 3 1/4 years old. My skinny one can also pull his jeans (w/snap and zipper) down without undoing them. My other one can undo the snap/zipper (likes doing it) and can get them re-zipped but not re-snapped while they are on him. He can do snaps though.

Ben wears pants with buttons and snaps and can get them off just fine (they usually have the adjustable waistband and I keep it loose). He sometimes has a hard time getting them back on but he has me trained to help him.

After one week of preschool he came out of the bathroom at home and was so proud. "Look mommy, I did it!" He did the snap and zipper all by himself. His teacher taught him. I guess I was always so busy helping him, that I never just MADE him do it himself!

My son is 3 and wears a 4T/5T so I really don't have much of an option. Luckily, he can pull them down or he gives enough advance notice that we or his teacher can get him to the bathroom. We tried the ones from BabyGap with no snap/zipper but because of his size, it didn't work for us. Good Luck!
