I'm 5'6" tall and was 125 lbs to start with!!!
Now, at 28 weeks, I am 162. Out of the 37 lbs gained so far, I have gained 10 lbs in the last 3 weeks

My OB told me yesterday that 10 lbs in 3 weeks is a little too much and they are expecting only a total of 50 lbs weight gain by 38 weeks!!!

Is 50 usually the limit? Am I gaining too much?

I do not eat junk (ofcourse, sometimes I do indulge...what is pregnancy without that??? :D ), but I feel hungry all the time!!! What am I supposed to do?

I don't think it's too much. . . I noticed that the bulk of my weight gain so far has occurred between 22 and 28 weeks. (20 lbs. during that time, 10 lbs. after losing 5 lbs. up until 21 weeks=30 lbs. at 29 weeks) Here at 29 weeks, the weight gain has definitely stalled again. And I'm eating constantly on hospital bedrest with 3 Ensure shakes a day plus 3 snacks and 3 meals! The babies need all those calories during those 24 to 28 weeks because their organs and all are really getting developed during that time, etc. They start trying to put some fat on their bodies too.

As long as you are eating nutritious foods, not just empty stuff, I say don't let the docs scare you into cutting back. It's definitely not like you have a weight problem. I read in a twins book recently that multiples pregnancies are different when it comes to weight gain vs. singletons. The author recommended that women with multiples should gain 45 to 60 lbs.

    My two cents anyways!

Feed your babies. You will lose the weight. I gained 65# with my girls; no one ever said anything to me about being too fat. Good luck!

Everybody is different. My OB gained 80 with her singletons!! You are fine! Some docs are just anal about weight!

I gained 40 with my singleton and 30 with my twins. I am overweight to begin with so I thought I would have gained more. I think one of the reasons that Doctors get concerned about gaining too much is because they see how hard some women struggle to loose it in the end. I had one of those doctors that worried about weight gain, in-fact he has a reputation for it, but he never once said anything to me about my weight gain. IMHO, I don't think just because your having twins means you can put on a large amount of weight. Especially for the women who are petite in the first place.
I'm sure doc's are also worried about blood pressure, glucose and things of that nature.

I have said a few times.. I am one that thinks maternal weight gain in a multiple pregnancy is vital to the health of the babies. You are doing great.. and you can worry about taking that weight off after the babies are born. A really good book to read is Dr Lukes book. She has a detailed chapter on weight gain and the reasons.

Also.. keep in mind that as you get further along you won't be able to eat as much so those extra pounds are going to be what your babies use as nutrients.

I will give you a :woohoo for your weight gain.. IMO its wonderful!

I agree with the PP's. I think your weight gain is fine. I have lost a couple pounds the last few weeks so I am really glad I got that 40 pounds on early.

Ive read that some mums-to-be gain between 40-90lbs with their twins but that you lose a lot in the first couple of weeks after giving birth.

I´ve gained nearly 50lbs so far and Im only 34.5wks! A lot is water retention too.

When I was constantly hungry, I´d drink warm milk to help ward off those hunger pangs. Fruit, yoghurts also help but I understand the hunger issue as I had to eat every 2 hours in the beginning! Towards the end, you lose your appetite a bit due to them taking up so much space.

Keep cooking those babies, they will be strong and healthy at the end which is what the aim is! GL!

Don't worry about it. Seriously! Most first pregnancies end up with a higher weight gain, anyway.

My doc always told me not to worry about the weight gain - but not to forget about it either. I started out overweight, but during my first pregnancy I put on 60 lbs. That was with one baby. I think the stressful part is how it related to your physical ability to deal with the weight gain.... but you sound like you were fairly thin to begin with, so don't stress about it too much. :)

I gained 80 with my girls, and I cried and cried when my OB told me I was gaining too fast. I couldn't help it, I was ravenous all the time and I never had any morning sickness. Now when I see how one of my babies acts when she gets hungry I know exactly why I ate so much! She gets ravenous and starts to panic just like I did when I was pregnant with her. If you are hungry, eat! You'll lose it after they are born, you just might be dieting for the whole year after they are born like I am doing now!

You are doing just fine. I gained 40lbs with my singleton and most of that was water since I lost 30lbs of it in the first week after I gave birth.

I'm right there with you with the weight gain and I eat fairly healthy and just when I'm hungry...which is always!

    At 16 weeks I've gained 17 pounds. :)

I bet a lot of what you gained the last time was water weight. Don't worry and don't listen to your doc. Just do what you are doing.

(I started out at about 125 with both my pregnancies). I'm 5'7

Hee hee! I wonder if it's something about doctors in Virginia....or twin mamas to be in Virginia!

I started my pregnancy at 5'7" and 135...and right about where you are in your pregnancy, I put on 11 pounds in one month.
My OB (with great kindness) said that was "awfully fast to gain that much" and to make sure I was keeping my eating healthy and in check. Interestingly enough, now in retrospect, I do kind of give our bodies when expecting some credit...
Yes I gained 11 lbs in one month, but toward the end, I actually LOST a few pounds...just felt full all the time and struggled to get food in. (The babies were gaining okay, but I was losing.) Think that early "pack on" actually was something my body somehow knew it needed.

Like others have said, there is much research lauding early and significant weight gain with multiples...and as previous posters have said, some docs justhave concerns about you "taking it off" afterward. That said, I had gained 45 pounds by the time I delivered (the gain DID slow down!), and now that my twins are 6 and a half, I STILL weigh 10 pounds less than I did pre-pregnancy! (granted, it's all in different "places" but the number on the scale makes me happy ;) )

All the very best to you...and wishing you a happy and healthy meeting with your babies!

Thank you all...Donno what I'd have done without all your support. I was so upset after my doctor's visit!!!!
Now I feel so much better after reading your replies...I am eating as and when I feel hungry. And I hope when my babies come out, they are healthy :)

I think that it is different for everyone. I started out a little over weight and have only gained about 25 pounds at 32 weeks. My doctor says I should only be gaining a pound a week from here on out.

My supervisor had twins about three months ago and gained over 50 lbs. So, you see, it really depends on the person. Just continue to eat right and everything will be okay.

Oh, I'm so glad to hear you say that, I was 5 lbs overweight pre-preg, gained 5 pounds INSTANTLY (one of the reasons I went into the doctor) and have gained a total of 13lbs, in the 1st trimester! I am eating bad some days, but not most. It is so frustrating, everyone keeps on telling me I am gaining too much... gah

I'm not a medical person, and I've only been pregnant with twins for 10wks AND this is my first pregnancy...

    BUT...

If your hungry, really, hungry....isn't that your body's way of telling you to EAT? Personally, I would listen to my body, it knows alot more than the doctors! :p

    Best of luck to you!!
