I'm 5 months into my pregnancy and my Dr. tells me I need to watch my weight. I've gained 22lbs, which I think is a healthy amount. I'm not even eating the amount of carbs the dietician says I need to be eating. Has anyone else been told to watch their weight? I just think it's ridiculous; I have 2 babies, not one.

Frustrated!! Thanks for letting me vent.

  2. Hi,
At my 20 weeks appt. I also gained 20 lbs. and the doctor said he was not concerned. At my 24 weeks appt. I gained 30 lbs. total and he is still not concerned. I wouldn't be concerned if I were you. YOu are eating to keep your babies healthy.

    Hi Min,

Thanks for the reassurance. All the twin books I read say to gain 1 to 1.5 lbs per week, so I think I doing just fine. You're so right, I'm eating to keep my little ones healthy.

    Thanks again.
    God Bless,

    Tanya

i've actually yo-yo-ed with my weight, not intentionally. i gained, lost, gained, lost, and gained and now i'm at about a 42 lb weight gain. my dr. hasn't mentioned any concerns. to be honest, i thought my babies were measuring a little small, and if i gained more weight, maybe they'd weigh more? how about those mothers who are pg with one and gain over 50 pounds? i think your weight gain sounds fine, and similar to mine at that time.

In Dr. Barbara Luke's book, she recommends gaining 40-56 lbs with a twin pregnancy. So 22 lbs at 5 months is definitly NOT too much! If you are like me, your weight gain will dramatically slow in the third trimester because you are so big and your stomach is so squished it becomes hard to eat a lot of food.

I'm surprised at your doc - I wouldn't worry about it at all - you sound right on track. I also read that it's better to gain early in b/c your stomach won't be able to hold much once those babies are bigger.

Try not to worry about it - maybe ask your doctor what his guidelines are so you can see if he's just crazy! [IMG]

I am now officially up from 130 to 190!!!! and I am only 32.5 wks....my doc has absolutely nothing bad to say about it. You are supposed to gain a 1lb a wk the first half and 1.5 lbs a wk the second half! I really cant believe he would ask you to watch your weight... I wouldnt worry about it! sorry for some reason that made me a little up set so I am trying not to go off on a tangent here! [IMG]

in the beginning my dr had said something about watching my weight gain but he has never mentioned it again. I think it is silly, like others have said...there are 2 babies in there growing and need all the nutrition they can get.

With my lsat pregnancy my ob was all over me about my weight. I dreaded getting weighed at each appt, and felt like I was on a diet my whole pregnancy! With this pregnancy, my new ob is so chill about it. She hasn't said one thing about it. I think it really varies from dr. to dr. Sounds to me like you're right on track.

I've gained 20 lbs in 22 weeks and my docs are all very happy with that. As long as you are eating healthy I really can't understand why your doctor would have a problem with your weight gain so far.

I think it is fine. What guidelines did he give you at the beginning of preg? Were you overweight to begin the preg? That is the only way I could understand a doc saying that?????

Don't fret. I think some OB's just aren't aware that you *should* gain a lot of weight with twins.

I started this pregnany about 20 to 30 lbs overweight, and have still managed to gain 30 pounds in 19 weeks (egad). Still, my OB practice hasn't said a single word about it. And, the Luke book recommends gaining the weight early, as it's difficult to eat much when the babies get bigger.

I packed on 40 pounds with my singleton, and even then, the doctor never mentioned it (different practice). I think different bodies just do different things -- I wouldn't worry. It's good for you to be gaining right now, and you can always lose it later!

I forgot to add on my PP that my Ob told me that some women are genetically inclined to "pack on the pounds" they believe it comes form our ancestors who survived periods like ice ages and the depression with little to eat...so they packed on evey calorie and were still able to have successful pregnancies. I gained upward of 40 lbs with my singleton (and that doc didnt have anything to say about it either) I am now at 60lbs (yikes!!) with several weeks to go... and some of it is water weight... but I am healthy as a horse and have always eaten that way (with a "little" cheating here and there) Dont worry about it no matter what you do I guarantee your body will put on the weight it needs... and usually you can do nothing to stop it!

have you read Dr. Luke's book? It's a great resource, the best i've seen, even though i do not adhere to everything she recommends (having puked for four months there was no WAY i could get in the amount of protein she suggested, but it did help orient me to making better nutritional choices when my body was able to handle it. I found the What to Expect....had very little that was helpful and specific to twin pregnancy.

Given your doctor's advice, i'd ask how much experience he has with twin pregnancies? Dont know what your options are, but you might want to research a different OB option especially atthis point in your pregnancy. I would definitely start talking to him about your parameters for a birth plan: for example, i know people whose doctors had had little experience w/twin birth and INSISTED on doing a c-section, regardless of the particular case.

You should remember that while we are taught to trust medical professionals, they are NOT Gods!

    Goodness,
Thank you'll so much for your experiences and support. I'm 5'9 with my starting weight at 145 so I was not overweight, if anything people always said I was too skinny.

My Dr. is one the top OB-GYN in San Francisco and she has experience with twin pregnancies, so I'm not sure what she's on. I'm not going to even worry about it. I know that I'm doing just fine for my babies and hearing all of your stories proves my point.

Thank you so much for your support.

    God Bless,

    Tanya

Good for you! You have to know when to go w/ your gut, and when your doc if full of it!!!

I think your weight gain sounds perfect for your body.

I gained 60 lbs, and my ob said "good gain" I know it was probably more than I should but it was fine! Do what feels right!

I'm 14 weeks and have only gained 5 pounds, which I think is too low! My doctor (not my regular OB, but another one in the office) said it was a good thing and I don't believe her. I don't think she knows anything about twins. I think you gained a good amount of weight, not too much! You have to do what's healthy for your twins. I'm going to keep trying to pack on pounds, to gain 40-56 (suggested in Dr. Luke's book) regardless of what that doctor says.

GO, TANYA! You have a great attitude about this. And to the PP, Kristen, I had lost 5 lbs by week 12 and then put on 20 in a month. Your body will take good care of you and the babies if you eat what you can when you can.

I felt awful when I read Dr. Luke's book in my first trimester - there was no way I was going to be able to LOOK at that much protein, let alone eat it. But at my latest perinatologist visit yesterday the Doc said the little guys are around 90th percentile for weight...so even with a late start we're all doing fine (for now!).

The recommended amount is 24 lbs by 24 weeks so you sound right on track. Every woman and pregnancy is different and you are carrying two babies so you need to gain more weight than the average woman. As long as you are eating healthy and there aren't empty calories everyday, then your weight gain is perfect.

I was a tad under weight to start...105lbs now I am up to about 135lbs, so I'm up 30lbs and I'm only at 28 weeks. I'm certain I'll gain at least 50 lbs...and I'm ok with that. Cause I'd rather sacrifice my body to make these babes grow big and healthy. I eat really well, mostly all healthy stuff, but you body just retains what it should I think. My doc just laughed at me when I complained that I gained 8 lbs in a month over Xmas...he said he gained that mucha nd isn't pregnant with twins! I think your doc is just being overly medical!!! DO NOT FEEL BAD...22lbs is nothing!
