Is it normal to gain 10lbs by 17 weeks? The first trimester I was so sick and ended up losing weight, now I've gained 10lbs in the second trimester. How many pounds is normal to put on a week with twins? Any idea?

    Hi there,

I was also very worried about my weight gain, but don't worry, you are fine! I lost 10 lbs in my 1st trimester, then by 13 weeks I was back to normal. By 17 weeks I had probably gained about 10lbs as well, and now at 27 I have gained 20 because I was freaked about my lack of weight gain and started to eat like a pig!

I just asked my doctor on Monday if he was concerned with my lack of weight gain and he said "Oh, no! It is very normal to lose weight in the first trimester, and then even for twins I only expect you to gain 30lbs total." Then he told me that I should stop "trying" to gain weight and just eat a healthy diet.

You have 20 weeks left to gain 20 lbs - 1 lb a week is the perfect amount to be gaining in your second & third trimesters.

Also, remember that nobody knows your body as well as you do. If you feel like you are eating a healthy and plentiful diet and you feel good and your babies are growing well, then how much or little weight you gain is not important. I asked the same question on an earlier post and so many women responded with weight gain from 15 to 50lbs, all with healthy twins!

Okay thank you so much. I'm just wondering how I'm going to get off the couch or out of bed later. Lol

:good: Perfectly normal. That actually doesn't sound like a lot to me...are you worried that's too much? You want to gain more weight with a twin pregnancy than a singleton pregnancy...you have two babies in side. And I agree, your body knows how much weight to gain.

Ooh, I thought you were thinking you weren't gaining enough too! That's what I was worried about because all the books tell you to gain like 45-50lbs with twins!

Not that 10 is too little, but a lot of books and websites will tell you that it is. 10lbs by 17 weeks is probably perfect honestly, and now just focus on gaining a pound a week from here on.

Remember that the baby weight at the end is like 12 lbs or something..times two! So You will quickly lose a lot of weight at birth.

Anyway, if you're having trouble getting off the couch now, then get to the library and the movie store asap and stock up because it doesn't get any easier ;) I do a LOT of sitting & laying around. It sometimes really just hurts to walk, and I know its only going to get worse!

    Good luck!
