weight differences

I'm 33 weeks and just got back from a growth scan. Baby A weighed in at 3 pounds 15 ounces and baby B is 5 pounds 7 ounces. That seems like such a huge difference to me I just can't wrap my brain around it. Baby A has gained a pound in three weeks and Baby B has gained a pound and five ounces. Baby A is breech and way in my pelvis and Baby B is head down but pretty high up. The doctor came in and said that Baby A's umbilical cord was showing a little resistance (whatever that means) and that the placenta might be in a weird place which is why it isn't working as well as Baby B's, but besides that everything looks good with blood flow and fluid levels. I have to start going twice a week now for monitoring and blood flow checks and will go back in two weeks for another growth scan.

I guess I'm just surprised that the doctor wasn't more concerned, that seems like such a disparity in weights between the two babies. I was convinced that the doctor was going to come in and tell us he wanted to admit me and schedule a c-section asap, but he said it looks like I am on course to go to 37 weeks. We don't know what we are having, so part of me thinks baby A is a little girl and baby B is a big boy, but scientifically I don't think that really makes sense or matters. I can't help but worry, worry, worry which drives my husband crazy, crazy, crazy!

Does anyone else have this big of a difference, or had this big of a difference, and if so what has your doctor told you? It's not that I don't trust the doctors, but I'm just curious to see if anyone has had personal experience with this. Thanks!

There was always a pound between my boys, and when they were born at 37 weeks, baby A was 6lbs 9oz and baby B was 5lbs 2oz. The fact that they are going to be watching you very closely and doing growth scans often is a good thing. If they see that one of the babies is slowing in growth or not growing, that's what happened to my baby B, they will take them right away. Hang tight and try not to worry.

At my last scan, my girl was 4.5 and boy was 5.5. MFM was not really concerned about that. I am going back for another scan next Monday (3 weeks from the last one).
Try not to worry too much. Twice weekly monitoring is a very good thing.

my girls shared a placenta & were born at 4lbs 2oz & 5lbs 7oz and other than extra monitoring in case of TTTS no one was terribly worried. take a deep breath & try not to worry!

It's very possible that the weight for Baby A isn't correct given her (his?) position. My perinatologist told me that measuring babies deep in the pelvis is really really hard. So you may find that when your babies are born Baby A is bigger than they expected.

Mine were born at 34 weeks 4 days and were one and a half pounds apart. Granted, they were in their own sacs and had normal fluid levels, etc. So it was never a big concern. By age three, my son was 10 pounds heavier than my daughter!

Just wanted you to know that a big difference is not always a bad thing. Sometimes it is just genetics!

  7. Thanks everyone, I feel much better after reading everyone's post. I also feel better because a friend of mine who is due 3 days after me told me that at her ultrasound last Thursday, her baby was weighing in at 3 pounds 10 ounces and she is just having one. So that makes me less worried about 3 pounds 15 ounces. I'll just feel better when they are here and I can see them to make sure everything is alright. Only 4 more weeks, I'm sure it will fly by!

My girls were a pound apart at birth. For me, it was Baby B who was always a little smaller. My peri never batted an eye because they were di-di. Each had their own growth curve and each was doing well. Now as infants and toddlers I can tell you the weight difference never set Baby B back. She is a little smaller than her sister, but right with her on all her milestones!

Your twins sound like they are both growing, which is what you want. If they are girl-boy, that does account for a difference. And I second PP'ers who say that it's hard to get accurate measurements in your Baby A's position.

Worrying about this is OK, totally natural, but it sounds like everything's alright!

Keep in mind that ultrasound weights are just estimates. We were told our girls were over 5 pounds each before their premature birth... neither was, though one was close. I don't recall how far off the ultrasound weight was. Try to stay positive and keep up with the monitoring!

    Good luck.
