I took Ava in yesterday just for a weight check. She's still on Neosure formula and I was hoping for the OK to switch to Similac. Ped. has already ok'd solids for her. She's on cereal and veggies, starting on the fruits this weekend. She drinks 3-4 8oz. bottles a day plus 1-2 solid feedings.

She weighs 12lb 8oz. right now (up a lb. from 4 weeks ago). She's gaining steadily, but still only in the 10th % for weight. I definately think she's going to be the smallest of my 4, but maybe she'll surprise me.

It's another month of Neosure for her.... good for her, bad for my checkbook :)

Crystal, have you asked your pedi about mxing regular formula to a higher calorie? Neosure is 22 cal/ounce, but regular formula can be mixed to 22 cal/ounce or more (I mixed Grace's to 26 cal/ounce). It's way cheaper - I used the Kirkland/Costco brand once we switched. My girls continued to gain just fine that way.

Do you mean add extra formula when mixing? How did you calculate that? That would make sense, b/c she really only needs the extra calories.

Hi Crystal. I had a little peanut too and I had a very worrisome time especially because her rather robust sister gained at such a rapid rate in comparison. Your little one actually weighs more than my Nicole at that age...but you really need to look at her rate of growth and thr kind of weight gain you're describing is great! My peanut is now almost four years old and she is a healthy happy energetic little girl who is as tall as her sister, but much slighter.

A friend of mine just named her baby Ava. I love the name! I know it's hard, but try not to worry. It sounds like she's doing great (and so are you!)

My twins are 12 1/2 months and they weigh only 19 & 19.5 lbs. The doctor told me not to worry.....some kids are just smaller. I myself am only 5ft. So......don't worry.

I agree with the pp about just adding some extra formula to get the extra calories. We've had to do this with our babies since they aren't gaining well (at 4 months DD was only 8 lbs 12 oz, 2nd percentile). I'm breastfeeding, which ped says has about 20 calories, and he wanted them to get more per ounce. He said to mix 1/3 tablespoon of the high calorie formula in and we should be fine.

I'm sure the same thing would work with formula, instead of 1 scoop for every 2 ounces you could add just a little more. The other thing with the high calorie formula though, is the extra nutrients. If you read the labels the high calorie stuff has more calcium etc, per serving than the regular formula. That's why our ped wanted us to supplement with that instead of the regular.

Check with your ped - it couldn't hurt to ask.

And way to Ava - that weight gain is awesome!
