Hi. My DS Daniel is 9 months corrected. He suffered from horrible reflux and we put him on Prevacid and switched him to Alimentum at about 4 months corrected.

Well....we're weaning off the Prevacid with no issues to date - we've gone from 3 1/2 pills a day to just a 1/2 pill in the morning. I think we could get rid of that and he'd still be fine.

We switched to Alimentum when we were grasping at straws to figure out what to do. It seemed to lessen the vomiting. He was never diagnosed with an allergy or anything.

So I'm thinking it's time to wean him off the Alimentum.

How do I go about this? His brother is on the most basic Similac formula. Do I just mix these 2 for a while? Or do I go to something else first?

Any tips will be greatly appreciated!

One of my girls had been on Nutramagen (Enfamil's version for colic) since she was about 1 month and we started weaning her off of it at about 4 months. My pediatrician said to do it over a week or so and slowly decrease the amount of special formula she has. We are doing it VERY slow to make she handles it OK (we tried at 3 months and she had terrible gas so we waited another month). We started with 1/4 regular formula and 3/4 special formula and then moved to half and half and are now at 1/4 special formula, 3/4 regular. She is doing fine but we have been doing this for over a month. I am on my last can of Nutramagen (hopefully). Good luck.

When we weaned from the "liquid gold" ( :D ) at 12.5 months we were going to milk because Derek had been diagnosed with a milk protein allergy and we used it for the entire first year. But in terms of weaning, we did mix with a gradual change over to milk. So, if he tolerates it, I would mix it with the new formula. If he hates it I might be inclined to go cold turkey and just switch since you really want him to keep drinking the ounces. Good luck. That is so great that you are able to wean off the Prevacid. Ours got much better much better by 8 months-did you ever think it was going to happen??

Hannah was on Nutramigen, and I did it fairly quickly, replacing 1/2 of the formula with regular, and then switching altogether when I knew she was tolerating it well after about a week.

DS1 was on Nutramigen and we switched to Good Start over about a week and a half. We did 1/4 regular for a few days to see if it was ok. Then we did a half, then 3/4, then all regular. He did fine like that. Good luck!

We did end up still having to put rice in the new formula to help with spitting up, but we were doing that with the Nutramigen too.

The girls were on Nutramigen for the first 4 months. We took them off very slowly. We just decreased 1 scoop of Nutramigen every 2 days and replaced it will regular Enfamil. Not that you have to do it that slowly but we didn't want to take any chances. CLaire had a very sensitive stomach in the beginning. It all worked out great though! Feels good to be off the expensive stuff!

Great post as I am curious to see how it will work for us. We are suppose to switch straight to milk and I have no idea how to do it or if she can take it. We also weaned from prevacid to every other day now! What a relief huh?

Thanks everyone for your responses. I went a bought some Enfamil Gentle Ease tonight...we'll start the weaning tomorrow!

And yep - we are so relieved and happy to be weaning off the Prevacid. I never thought I'd see this day when he wouldn't eat and anything he did eat came right back up. Now, he loves his bottle and solids. He's a pleasure to feed now. When we were in the thick of it (which for us lasted about 4 months), he wouldn't even let me hold him when he had his bottle. He had to either be in the bouncy seat or highchair. And at one point we were even feeding him in the exersaucer! Now, I can hold him like a regular baby....it's a good job too...since that's about the only cuddle time I get these days!
