I just got back from our EI assessment and the boys are "average" in everything except their speech. There is a big discrepancy in how they are receptive to speech and their lack of "speaking". The only thing they are using to determine this is that they don't say ba/da/ma yet. They make noises all the time, but because they are only vowel based, they are slightly concerned. I'm fine getting the free service, but am not sure what they will be able to do at EI that I'm not doing already. I guess I'll learn that soon enough. I almost feel guilty that we are taking up someone's time for something that I have no doubt the boys will figure out soon.

On a very up note, Ryan sat for his longest time yet! And that was the milestone I was most worried about!

Not really any questions, just needed to share the news. Thanks for listening/reading.

P.S. Does anyone know how to slow down that ticker in my siggy?? We're almost to the 8!!

:hug99: I hope EI helps them. I'm shocked that at such a young age they are going to be working on speech. But I'm sure your boys will progress great. Keep us updated on how they are doing!!

I felt bad getting a PT referral for Drew as well. But they really did have some good suggestions to add to what we are doing, and if nothing else it gives the babies a little bit more one on one time. And it happens so quick, Livi was our quiet one and all of the sudden she went from saying nothing but 'iiii', to dadadada, and agagaga in a week on her own.

And I hear ya on the ticker, I can't believe we are almost 2/3 of the way through the first year!!

Wow, isn't it really early to be worried about babbling?

Kevan is also making only vowel-based sounds.....do you think I should call? Our ped didn't seem concerned at all at his 9-month visit, but it's been a couple months since then, so....hmmm.

I would love to hear what sort of exercises they do with your little guys...

My boys receive weekly "speech" therapy (they are hearing impaired) and there are a lot of fun things their teacher does with them. She sings songs and reads to them and will try to get them to imitate sounds that she makes. There are some basic sounds she practices with them (ah, ee, oo, mmm, sh, sss) which are across all frequencies that help with the development of speech. Their teacher is fanastic and we receive regular evaluations to determine if they qualify to continue for EI and how they are doing developmentally for their age. Good luck

Good luck with EI. I too am surprised that was recommended to you because really adjusted they are only 5 months old and really not to be doing anything speechwise. At least that is how it works here. I called and they said they would always use their adjusted age. Mine probably didnt babble much at their 9 month appt but the Ped was not concerned because they were making sounds just not da da. But by 12 months it was much better and by 15 we had words. Anyway sorry for the ramble. EI is great and I am sure they will teach you lots of cool things and then you can teach the boys too!
