The boys had a runny nose for about a week.. clear and all.. they had a few coughing fits but yesterday they were finr// no cough no funny nose no nothing... This morning B wakes up barking like a seal and having trouble breathing... I pulled out the nebulizer and now hes off playing.. I wish I could get him to sit still so he does not make anything worse...

i know alot of us are dealing with croup right now and I hope we all get through it quick and easy....

I wanted to know how you all deal with croup in your home.... From treatments to just how the day and night go in you home when one or more of your children have croup..

what do you do to help with the coughing and the breathing...

In our home we have a cool mist humidifier in the boys room but ill be bringing it to the living room today b/c thats were willl be the most..

We go outside for a few min for the cool air.

I offer them warm tea. ( suggestion from the nurse)

and I read this online.. Vicks on feet covered with socks... it says at night but I do it during the day as well and it really works to stop a cough ( not sure about a croup cough but I dont see why it would not work)

Im going to give him some motrin in a min to help with the inflammation... and maybe some vicks on his chest too..

bendryl is hes got a runny or stuff nose on top of everything...

Meds will be a last resort however.. I dont like medication the kids if they dont need it....

    hope everyone feels better soon!!!

ETA: How do you keep them calm so the breathing problems dont flare again..... Dh just took his phone away from B and he took off screaming and crying... of course that made it worse again..

    UGH!!

It sounds like you've got it covered. I hope it clears up for your guys soon!

For my asthmatic guy, I do give albuterol in addition to the pulmicort he's on. They both would get Motrin and we keep to our normal routines. I don't do much with vaporizers anymore. If either wakes up in the middle of the night after coughing, we go for a little walk outside. It's a lost cause in keeping them calm so I let them do their regular activities.

We live in Florida, so it was never cold enough outside for us. We would open the freezer door & let them breathe that in for a while. We also did breathing treatments.

We just got over croup. My boys get it every year and oddly enough my girls have never had it. We use the cool mist humidifiers. I wouldn't personally use vapor anything with croup, it tends to dry you up and with croup, thats not what you really want. The shower never works for us as it makes their breathing worse. Prednisone is the only thing that works for us. Oh, and the Xoponex neb. Sometimes we use the Xoponex inhaler instead but for some reason the nebulizer noise calms them down. Worse case we do try the cold air outside although right now we can't find any cold air as its sooo warm outside anymore!

Good luck, the 1st and 2nd nights are the worst!

We had very good luck with a Vicks Vaporizer and the VapoSteam in it. Every night for a week and it went away.

I use to love the Vaporizer, but now that they are older, I am scared they will pull it down on them or somehow hurt themselves. I use the Vicks plugins! I love them!
