Lauren is my little language sponge. She focuses very hard when I say words to her and constantly tries to mimic me. She has said several words out of context including dada, papa, momma, etc. She did try ah-dah (all done) one time.

I gave her a small soft duck that she hugs all the time and she took it and clear as a bell said "guck". She kept repeating it and hugging it. I took it away, waited a while and gave it back to her and she kept saying it again. I thought I heard something that resembled this the other day but it was not as clear as today. It was just too precious!!!!!!!

***EDITED***: So today she is saying "duck" a lot - but it's not always in context! Grrrr!! She has done this with another word, said it plain as day, but sometimes out of context. So, when do you count the first word. When it's really a word and used as it should? Soooo confused.

I think it counts, she is just like Bambi right now, doesn't know that everything has a word for it so it might be a duck too. :) she is just practicing her new word by saying it over and over, context or not.

I think it counts too! Emma calls a dog a dog dog, but she also calls every other animal and sometimes people dog dogs! Close enough to count!

It's a word when you say it's a word! Like when Sean learned to say "Hi!" everything was "Hi!" now he uses "Hi!" in context.

Oh yay! Then I'm calling that her first word. I usually give her the duck andsay "hug the duck" so she said duck last night when she gave me a hug. Then I put her on the floor and she leaned over to Emma and "hugged" her, then gave her a kiss!!!!!!! She is trying so hard to mimic me and get those words out!!

    Hi michelle,

Here's a great link that discusses language development in kids... Receptive and Expressive..

    Lang Devel

Congrats. Wyatt came home from Rochester and everything was a dog, too. They get such good reactions to speaking their words, i htink they just try to get more smiles from mom/dad so they say them all the time!!

That's exactly what I was thinking!

I definitely would count it as her first word!

I count it when the word is used in context, then confirm it by seeing it used during the following days, with motion towards what the baby is trying to get. ("da-da" would only count for me, if DH walks in the room and then the baby throws her arms up and motions at daddy to pick her up -then she keeps directing it at only him when she sees him, if that makes sense).

All babies go through "da-da", "pa-pa", "ma-ma" so it's no surprise that in almost every language on the planet, "dad" is usually "dada" or "papa/baba" and mom is usually "mama" or something similar.
