Water & sippy

Discussion in 'The First Year' started by preciousbabiesmom, May 9, 2007.

A few people have asked me if I have started giving my girls water yet. I haven't even thought about it. When do you start?

Also, when did you introduce the sippy cup? What did you put into it?
    Thanks!

I introduced the sippy around 6 months, and they chewed on it until about 8 months! I either put formula or water in it, mostly formula.

We started sippies with water at about 7 months. (We started solids at 6 months.) Of course we had to hold the cup for them until more like 11 months, but they did drink some. There's no need to give water until you start solids, but after that it's a good idea, to reduce the chances of them getting dehydrated and constipated. Even if they just drink a few swallows, it helps offset the fact that solids (even purees) have less water than breastmilk or formula. You can just get one ready at each solids feeding and offer it to them every once in a while. My girls would drink from it like a hamster at a water bottle. :icon_biggrin:

We did water-only for several months, then at about 12 months when we were trying to transition off bottles, we replaced a couple of bottles with sippies of formula.

Now they get milk at breakfast and dinner, and water the rest of the time.

I started between 5-6 months, they picked it up very quickly. I personally feel sooner the better, if you wait to long it may be harder. This way they aren't suck in their ways to much and its easier for them to accept something new. I also had my girls off the bottle at 11 months, they would of went sooner but I wasn't sure if I was ready. :) Good luck.

[SIZE=12pt]Thanks for asking this question, because I have been wondering the same thing.

I give the girls sippy cups with water, but they just play with them. They put them in their mouths, but they don't really drink from them. When you first introduced them did you just hold them up for them like you would a bottle?

We started the cup first... they needed EBM and wouldn't take a bottle! The sippy we offered at 4 months I think. We have the nuby style and they actually drink it now at 7 months. I have to tip the cup a little but they drink from it now.

We were told to only put formula in the bottle, and water in the sippy. We started sippy's at about 6 months, and they made a mess with the water - it went EVERYWHERE for 2 months. Now at 8 1/2 months they can master the sippy's VERY WELL and actually like water. What a shock!

we started offering water with each meal once we started solids. they did NOT get the sippy part at all. they'd just gum it. so i take the lid off and just let them try to drink from the cup. most of it ends up down their front, but they get some. and they LOVE doing it! now they watch DH and I when we drink and get all antsy wanting some! it's so cute! hopefully they'll figure out the sippy part soon, so it's not quite so messy!

We started water in a sippy at meal time at six months old. The pedi recommend we start then. They are almost eight months old and still show little interest. I am hoping they will start to catch on soon.

I, too, started giving my girls a sippy cup around 6 months with only water. Now at 10 months they love drinking their water from their sippies.
