I was just watching Nanny 911 and on this episode she told the kids sippy cups were for babies and then gave them new NUBY STRAW cups.
She said they were graduating up.

We already use the straw cups as my kids couldnt get the hang of the regular sippy cups in the beginning. SO now Im wondering why is the straw better than the sippy? Does it have to do with jaw muscles??

Straws are better for language development. Our OT recommended them when we were trying to get ours to drink from a cup as babies.

I think it does have something to do with the jaw muscles. I know my friends son had weak muscles around his mouth that were making him not speak and the first thing the OT told my friend was to get rid of the sippy cup and get him drinking from straws because the straw and how they use their mouth to suck on it would help him work out the muscles. :good: I'm sure there is a more scientific answer.

This stuff drives me a bit nutty. I mean seriously, how much time are they actually spending "drinking" from sippies or straws before 2? I have both the straws and sippies and we don't use bottles (since 11-12 mos), but I get a little crazy over this stuff sometimes. If I added in minutes the time mine spent with their mouth actually spent wrapped around a sippy, straw, cup or whatever...I think I'd get to about 6 minutes (at the most) out of 600 awake minutes. Is it really making a difference in their speech? How do they possibly test that? I get that they shouldn't be using bottles too long. I'm not hung-up on sippy vs. straw and mine use both (whatever happens to be clean), but seriously....speech problems? Jaw muscles? Where do they come up with this?!

    Rant over.

    I'm in a mood...sorry. ;)

i think another good thing about straw cups is that once they can use a straw well, they can drink anywhere (restaurants, etc) because straws are pretty readily available (more so than sippie cups;)).

I just laugh when hear about sippy vs straw, there is no proof that one is better then the other. This will not affect language, thats silly. :D

Well said moody! Feel the same. We have different types and they get whichever one I can lay my hands on first.

I have heard about the straw cups being better for jaw tone and therefore helping with speech. But with that being said, my older DD never really had a straw cup and talked well within normal limits. With the boys, we are doing straw cups only and they talk just fine. I think whatever preference your kids develop is fine.

I gotta agree here. Mine get a regular sippy and a straw sippy throughout the day. To the OP: that is awesome when you do something right and did not know about it :clapping:

Yeah, yeah me too. We're approaching 4 yrs old and I just bought some new sippies. WHATEVER! I use them for water on-the-go and for their morning milk. Sorry I don't feel like dealing with spilled milk in the morning. :pardon: Yes, they CAN drink out of regular cups and straw cups. I did use the Nuby straw cups first, but they are such a PITA to take apart and wash, plus they figured out how to turn them over and press the straw onto the table/floor and let the liquid leak all out, that I switched to hard spout sippies. :acute: Who knows when I'll give up sippy cups for good. I still carry around a water bottle for myself, I guess that's a sippy cup of sorts.

Totally agree here! My boys are mess makers so if we are lounging around the house they get sippies. If we are sitting at the dinner table they use regular cups.

Good for you! I read also that straws are better because they make different muscles work, and it helps with speech. Not to say kids that drink from sippies will have problems of course, but yes, straws are better (it's what my pediatrician said too but last time I tried they wouldn't drink from a straw... I guess I should try again).

How about regular straws like adults use? That's what my girls prefer - that or drinking straight out of a cup like an adult. My girls think they're so cool when they drink from a big straw. I've started giving them sippies when they first wake up, because I don't trust them to walk around with an open drink, but later on in the day I fill up cups with milk or water and sit on the floor with two straws and the girls LOVE it.

We use both straw sippies and hard spout sippies. I prefer the hard spout ones because they are easier to clean. I don't think it has made a difference in my girls ability to talk as they both have over 100 words that they use correctly in context, and will repeat everything you say perfectly, and they are only 18 months old.

Wow Krystyn thats amazing!!!! I know my pedi said by 18 months they should be able to say about 50 words and I thought....really? although my 14 month olds can say 10-15 so I guess they are well on their way. Do you read alot to the girls or do you go above and beyond to name things etc or did they do it all on their own?

Our pedi told us that the average 18 month old will have about 20 words. We do all of the above. They LOVE being read to! I honestly probably read an average of 50 books a day to them (some of them the same story over and over again). If I am reading them a story book (i.e. Dr. Seuss) I go through and point out all of the different pictures in the book. I also make a point to name everything, and describe it (the color, texture etc...) throughout the day. So far it seems to be working!
