I've been microwaving their formula to warm it for a few weeks now. I just make it to room temp since it comes straight out of the fridge. Someone told me that when you microwave formula, it kills the nutrients. Any truth to this? They've been growing like weeds so I find that hard to believe, but just want to be sure. Any thoughts?

Microwave is okay as long as you remember to check the temp and mix around the formula well after heating as the microwave creates hot spots.

I heard that if you microwave Breast milk that it kills the important nutrients. Haven't heard the same about formula..

I thought warming milk or formula in the micro was dangerous due to "hot spots". I'm b-feeding so I'm not up on this.

I don't believe there is any truth that microwaving kills nutrients. My entire family would have rickets  . I'm sure someone will find you proof! (personally, I'm too lazy to go look)

However, you should use a microwave safe glass container and NOT the bottle because chemicals are released from most plastics. You should also make sure it is super well mixed to avoid "hot spots" which could seriously hurt your babies.

The only reason they are concerned with microwaving is hot spots. I microwaved all my twins' bottles. I never did it till they were warm, mostly room temp. Just make sure you shake it up really good ... you'll just have to play with your microwave to make sure you need make it too warm (or hot!) ... I did it mostly to just take the chilll off ...

I asked my pedi about it, and she said it's fine, as long as you check for hot spots and shake it up good ... so no, it doesn't ruin the nutritional value.

It kills the nutrients in breastmilk (I never microwaved it), but I don't think it does in formula. I just shook the crap out of it when I microwaved my girls' bottles to make sure there were no hotspots.

I think that's a myth. I have been microwaving my boys bottles for almost a year now and they have grown just fine!!

You just have to be careful to never, ever microwave a bottle with the nipple on. My nephew had severe burns from a microwaved bottle and actually had to have long-term treatment at our children's hospital. Apparantly there was a clog in the nipple and no air could be released. Bottle was microwaved for 20 seconds and when it was taken out the formula burst out the sides. Freak accident, but if it could happen once then it could happen again. Crazy, huh?

I also microwave my twins´ bottles. I remove the teats and lids and give it a blast for about 20 secs. I make sure I mix it well due to the risk of hotspots and have never had a problem. I make their bottles before going to bed (with bottled water) and leave them at room temperature until the morning. Never had a problem with doing this.

As for the nutrients being killed, I´ve never heard of that with formula. Also the instructions on the tin (at least where I am) say the formula should be made with boiling water that has been cooled to 45ºC (113ºF)!

My two have been FF since they were born and are the size of 9-month olds (they´re 6 months old this Friday!)

I always nuked their bottles with the nipples off for about 20 to 30 seconds for a full 8oz bottle, a smaller bottle took less time. I did it just to take the chill out of it and they never had a problem with it being a bit cool. Do what makes your life easier!

We make our bottles ahead too, but they say microwaving can leave hot spots. We always put our drop-in liner in a glass of hot water twice then shake and feed.

I put the formula in a glass container before heating it and I don't heat it long..then I swirl it around. It's luke warm at best. I didn't think it killed the nutrients. My nanny said that her boss told her it killed the nutrients. I told her I thought that only happened with breast milk. I just wanted to be sure..I started to second guess myself there! Thanks for your input ladies! I really appreciate it. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!

Microwaving kills nutrients in all food. That's not to say the formula will be without any nutrients after microwaving - just not as many. I microwaved BM and formula. My "baby" is now 5 years old, in the 90th percentile for weight and 95th for height with a very keen mind. So in my experience, it doesn't cause harm.

Hmm.. I've been warming their darn bottles the SLOW way because I thought microwaving is a no no...but now I think I might just start doing it if so many other people are.
