Okay, first let me say that I have decided on doing CIO. I know it is ridiculously difficult to listen to (I've been letting them cry 30 mins, but I think I'm doing more harm than good by going in after that time). So, I went to the library today to pick up Ferber's book and....it's missing! They are ordering it for me from another library, but I wanted to start this week and who knows how long it will take to get the book. My question is: Is there a Cliff Notes version??? Can someone give me a rundown so I can start Tuesday night?

    TIA!

    Hi Megan,

I did CIO with all 3 boys, my girls slept through on their own. I found that going in made the crying worse, and last longer, so, I didn't!

My experience, along with a lot of others is in this link....

Baby Center has a good article that summarizes the basics of Ferber's approach.

    Good luck! :D

Let me know how it goes. I am thinking of trying at 6 months. I am tired of getting up 5-10 times a night !

    Night one:
J woke at 11 and R at 11:10. I did the increasing times to check on them, but they didn't even care I was there. They barely looked at me. They both fell asleep 1hr and 10 mins after they woke up.

One of them woke at 3, I waited 10 mins and I must have fallen back asleep. At 3:30 there was still some crying so I went and checked from the doorway. I went back to bed and by 4 everything was quiet. I woke to whining at 5:30, but honestly I was so out of it they could have been crying for a while. I fed them and they went back to sleep (no crying) and are still asleep. Sucks b/c I have to wake them in 20 mins to get ready for the zoo.

    I'll update again Wednesday morning.

Those of you who do CIO - or to the original poster - how long are your babies going at night?

I WISH mine would sleep all night, but now they are sleeping for 12 hours each night and each baby wakes up sometime to eat once - no earlier than 8 hours after her last feeding. I just can not let them CIO because I know the reason they cry is because they are hungry. As soon as I feed them they go right back to sleep. It is just tiring because I am still getting up two times per night most nights.
How will I know when they are physically able to go 12 hours w/o eating? Are you only supposed to do CIO if they are waking up to play?

This is exactly what my boys were doing...only they would go a max of 5-6 hours before eating. Last night after the CIO, they did not take any more from their a.m. bottle than they did with TWO night feedings! I think they were eating out of habit. Mine would go right back to sleep after eating and honestly it was easier than last night's crying, but they were so happy when they got up this morning so I don't feel guilty. Hoping tonight is as easy if not easier.

I have NO help to offer (b/c we did it blindly, without having read much of anything), but a success story: It took us 2 nights - the first night, they cried maybe 40 mins, the 2nd night maybe 10. Just be strong - I wanted to quit about 1000x in those first 40 minutes and DH had to literally hold me back. I'm glad I didn't go back in there and screw things up. good luck!
