walking at 18 month

Discussion in 'The Toddler Years(1-3)' started by [email protected], Apr 23, 2010.

Hi all, I have a question about walking. I have 18 month old girls and they are not walking on their own yet. Does anyone out there have a similar thing going on. They do walk by cruising around the room - holding on with one hand or they will hold on to my leg and walk with me but they will not let go. So any thoughts on this - is this something I need to see the doctor about or is this something common with twins?

If they haven't had their 18 months appt yet, I would probably at least mention it. I don't know the exact range, but certainly it wouldn't hurt to ask. If they do need any sort of help, it would be better to find out sooner rather than later. Good luck!

I would talk to your Dr. 18 months is on the later end.

    Where they premature??

common walking range is 10-18 months- with most kids starting to walk between 12-14 months.

My girls were 2 months early and walked at 14 & 17.5 months.

I have a 14 month old that isn't walking yet and he is totally taking his time. It wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't walking at 18 months. I would also talk to your ped but as long as they are cruising and getting around while standing then it will happen. Sometimes they just need to do it on their own schedule. I would keep practicing with a push to walk type toy.

I agree with Brigette, I would mention it to your pedi and keep practicing with a push to walk toy.
It sounds like they are doing well with the standing and cruising that is a good sign. My DS took his first steps at 12 months but did not walk independently until 14 months...it seemed to be a confidence thing with him, it was like he needed to be okay with the idea first before he did it.

    :good:

my dd walked at 18months and qualified for early intervention due to her gross motor delay. 18 months is the end of the "normal range"
I would talk to my pedi.

I would not be too worried. 18 months is the later end of the 'normal' range, but it sounds like they're well on their way to walking. Also, as pp said, if they were born early you can go by their adjusted age.

None of my twins walked early-they were all 18 months+ by the time they were walking confidently on their own. They're all fine and didn't need any intervention to help them, they were just late walkers (they were born at 32 weeks, but even adjusted for that they were 16-17 months for first steps).

I do agree with pp's that it wouldn't hurt to mention it to your pedi.

Every time I hear worries about walking I have to mention my brother. He scooted until he was 18 months. My Mom was so worried and feared he would never walk. He did at exactly 18 months. He ran cross country in high school and now, at the age of 44, he's done over 15 marathons.

Sure, maybe if they had EI back then, he would of walked sooner but from my untrained eyes, he walks perfectly fine.

Ask your pedi and if they have a concern, get a PT eval through EI.

Are your LOs cautious in general? They may be working up to it. Do they have big heads? If they have big heads like one of mine, they'll be slower to walk because of their difference in center of mass. I would talk to your Ped about it, just to make sure there aren't any other reasons.

Hi Becky. We are experiencing the same thing with our 18 month old twin daughters. We are already enrolled in Early Intervention (through our pedi's referral) and physical therapy comes once a week to work with them. I would definitely look into it if you're concerned. I'm sure they'll be walking solo in no time! :) Keep us posted.

Same boat hear and at 18 months we start EI and at home PT. Mine were early (33 weeks) and one was and still is small. My bigger guy could walk and has been able to stand on his own since December, but has always been super careful about everything he does. We started thinking maybe he was just waiting for his brother :unknw: My little guy is fearless and would love to be strong enough to walk/run. On Easter Gavin (the little one) took about 3-4 steps unassisted for the first time, this was just 2 days after they started PT. Who know if there is a connection but now that Warren sees Gavin he is walking more and more. We of course have been worried sick about it and now it is all happening so fast. I kept trying to tell myself that I havent yet seen a healthy 4 year old crawling still so they would get there eventually. It is hard when they arent meeting the milestones and everyone is looking at you like there is something wrong. It sounds like yours are getting there.

The normal range for walking is 9-18 months. Were your twins born early? Mine were born at 31 weeks, one walked at 11 months actual (9 months adjusted) and the other walked at 20 months actual (18 months ajusted). So they were on opposite ends of that range!

I would mention it at their 18 month appointment for sure.
