right now the girls are geting all EBM and the seem to have trouble passing gas/bowls. the pediatrician said it is normal for babies to strain and push when having gas/BM but sometimes they will push and strain for 30 minutes WITHOUT any result. they do usually go at least 1x per day, totally liquid so they are not constipated.

they would be STTN with a night time bottle at 8 ish bed 9-10ish, except every morning around 3-4am they start fussing and grunting/pushing etc and trying to pass gas or BM, they wake themselves up and seem to be in much discomfort. we've tried the gas drops with minimal effects. during the day the gas keeps them up too sometimes during nap times they will fuss and fuss and finally have gas or BM and fall immediately asleep so you can tell it was their intestines that was keeping them awake.

    does this sound normal?

Some babies are more gassy than others. Your diet plays a huge role too. Are you eating gassy foods? If you are then they are also. You said their stools are totally liquid- they may have some stool that they cannot pass and are pooping around it- hence it being liquid. I don't mean to sound gross or anything but I am a RN in the NICU and we see this all the time. You can try infant massage. My sister is certified in it and she taught me how to do belly massage that mimics their intestinal tract and it worked every time. Look up certified infant massage therapists in your area and maybe give it a try. My boys loved their massages- it relaxed them so much- and it was a nice way to bond. I see that you live in NY- where in NY? I live in Baldwinsville.

Hope this helps. Let me know what you do.

    Tracy,
i'm already doing a dairy free diet (which sucks....) one DD did have a day where she went 4 times and the last time was full of mucus... the pedi said not to worry but it was very weird for her.massage is a good idea i'll check it out. we live in albany.

the pedi said gas by itself is never a sx of anything but COULD there be something else going on? i just don't know since these are my first and you know how you worry so much about them. they are eating and gaining well with no vomiting or anything...
    thanks for your help.

My DS had horrible gas. Would wake up screaming and then pass gas and go right back to sleep, or struggle to sleep and then pass gas and fall asleep. My pedi thought it might be an allergy to dairy so we went on specialized formula. It got TONS better. My pedi did always ask me though if there was blood or mucous in the stool when I called. She said mucus can be a sign that something in what they are eating is irritating their bowels/stomach. I hope it gets sorted out soon! Good luck :hug99:

Does she have a milk protein allergy? Is that why you are dairy free? Usually a mucousy stool is a sign of that or maybe you already know that :pardon:

Maybe some gripe water might help with the gas pains? You can also put them on their backs and pump their legs like they are riding a bicycle to help relieve some of the pain. I hope they get some relief soon. I might also call the Ped or bring it up at the 4 month WBV and see if he or she has any recommendations to help them get some relief.

is it possible that a formula might be BETTER for them than my breastmilk?

My gut would be to say no- I couldn't get the twins to latch and had nipple bleeding/horrible pain/scabbing so I chose to stop BF and moved to formula mostly due to that. The pedi told me that if I had continued to BF I would have just had to watch what I ate and gauged their reaction (gas and such) and possibly eliminated certain foods from my diet besides dairy. I would think your pedi would be most qualified to answer that question though. My DD had issues too- but she did well on Similac Sensitive RS, while my DS had to be put on Similac Alimentum (hypoallergenic formula) and Prevacid for reflux. Sounds like your issues might not be as significant- but I agree with the pp- ask you pedi at your next visit- or even call them again. I know through his whole process with my two I called every three days or so to report how they were responding to different things we tried and to get advice on what to do next. That is what they are there for. Good luck!

DH and I suspect a milk protein allergy but the MD says that he doubts it b/c they dont' have any skin rashes, eczema and are not vomiting (all signs of a milk protein allergy i guess) but a while ago I drank 4 glasses of milk in one morning and they BOTH were inconsolable that evening so i decided to try dairy free... we have some good days where everyone poops on schedule with minimal complaints but they we also have some bad days too where they are fussy all day, sleep poorly, and don't pass gas or have a BM all day...

    Hi Liz!

Gas by itself is usually not a sign of something wrong. I can ask my sister if she knows anyone in the Albany area to recommend for infant massage- she is an Occupational Therapist as well and knows alot of people in surrounding areas- and since Syracuse is only a couple of hours away from Albany she may know someone. As long as they are eating well and gaining weight it sounds like they are fine.

I'm with you on the worrying part. I worried about everything as a first time mom. I also leanred that my instincts are right and that if you feel something just isn't right go with your instinct and make the dr listen to you. One of the boys was having seizures- the pedi said he wasn't. I insisted on a neuro referral and in fact, he was having them. Moms know their children better than anyone- even if it is your first time around.

Let me know how it goes and I will get back to you if my sister knows someone she can recommend for the infant massage classes.

    Tracy
