Waking at 4 am

Both boys have been going to sleep between 6:30 and 6:45pm and waking up between 6:00 and 6:30am for over a month now. We give one last bottle at 10 pm - although last night we did not give one to Cameron because he's only been eating an ounce or two the last few nights, and he slept through!

For about 2 weeks, Chase has been waking up at about 4 or 4:30am every day. He babbles and fusses and sometimes will go back to sleep, but sometimes this will go on for over an hour. When it goes on that long, he wakes his brother. After a week of this, I started going in after 5 am if he really started crying and put the pacifier in. Sometimes he will go back to sleep, but sometimes he won't. I know he's not hungry because he hasn't been finishing all of his bottle at 6:30am. HSHHC says early waking can be caused by too late a bedtime, so I can try backing up the bedtime by 20 minutes, but since the schedule worked fine for a month, I'm not sure that's the cause. Any ideas?

Mine did that for a couple of weeks a couple of weeks ago . . . I hope that made sense. I tried to leave them in their cribs as long as possible. I vowed not to get them out before 7am; however, some mornings I did have to give in. I did replace pacis. In our case it does seem to have passed. I hope it will for you too!

It could be teething! Mine sometimes thought that it was their rise time that early! Good luck & be patient!

My 5 mo. old boys go to bed between 6 and 6:30pm, and one has consistently been a 4 am waker upper. He putters because he doesn't want to be awake, yet cannot seem to go back to sleep. I finally let him CIO, and I am NOT a CIO fan. Since then, he continues to wake at 4, but will either putter back to sleep, or I will nurse him and he will sleep again until 8.

The night I planned to let him CIO, I moved my other DS so he wouldn't get woken up. But, as my DH says, I am queen of making up excuses of why he may be waking up (and why not to let him CIO). So maybe it is teeth, or is he getting a cold?

Emma has been doing this on and off for the last month or so. I think it is a combination of growth spurt, teething and a cold. Two nights ago she woke at 12 (they go down at 9), I changed her diaper and gave her some tylenol. She slept till regular wake up time of 6:30. Last night she didn't want to go down at 9 and threw a FIT. I gave her 2 Hylands teething tablets and she slept through.

We have had nights where we rock her for an hour before she goes down. There does not seem to be any pattern to the nights she wakes...I guess just try everything till you find something that works. It is probably just a phase and will pass...at least that is what I keep telling myself regarding Emma!!!

Crazy thing is - his brother is the one with a little congestion and stuffy nose, and he's the one who slept through the night last night. [IMG] I guess it could be teething. I'm sure this too shall pass... Thanks for all the advice!

My dd, Lorien, has been doing this for months now. She wakes up every morning at 4 am or so. She has two teeth that started coming in a few weeks ago and she has just recently learned to sit up on her on and started crawling 3 days ago. There are just soooo many factors that it could be caused from. Generally, our routine is that when I hear her start to stir on the monitor, I go in and get her sister who comes to sleep in our room. (We keep a pack n' play in our room.) That way she can continue to sleep without being disturbed and Lorien can continue to play and babble and make her other noises until she finally falls back asleep, which eventually she always does. Once in a while, I have to give her a bottle to fall back asleep (which she completely downs) and then I realize that she was really hungry. I figure with all her new activity, she needs the extra calories cause just a couple of hours later at our regular wake time (6:30-7:30) she downs another bottle. Don't know if I've helped at all but at least you know that there are many of us in the same situation.
