For those of you who have done it, I'm wondering what age you had your children's vision screened at and what prompted you to pursue screening? Jackson had a vision test about 9 months ago in conjunction with assessment of his blocked tear ducts. Everything seemed fine at that time, but he was only 9 months old. He has been blinking his eyes very hard lately and rubbing them-- they are not clogged or red/allergic or anything, so I am wondering if I should take him to the doctor. Is this something you would go to a regular Ped for and then get a referral, or just call an eye doctor directly?

Thanks for sharing any insight you may have! :)

Call and ask---My girls have had regular exams for a long time, Though they are preemies and one has a stigmatism.

Check with your state, we have gotten both free screening through the county (not part of any state aid/WIC--it is offered through a grant for ALL kids in our area) and gone to a pediatric opthomologist. Through our count-- free screening started at age 2--and the infant exams were free through the national infant see (link HERE. Check if they have a Dr near you that would see toddlers.

My DD w/ the stigmatism also rubs her eyes, squints, and closes that eye when looking at close objects.

Doesnt hurt to call and see what the Dr thinks .

Erin, if you are concerned, and esp. because of the previous clogged duct, I would call and ask them about it. It could just be allergy eyes or something simple like that but it never hurts to make sure. Good luck!

We used the "Infant See" program to get my one son screened around 11 1/2 mos (it was only good to 12 mos). He had a very slight lazy eye that I noticed & since lazy eyes run in our family, I wanted him checked. We saw a Pediatric Opthamologist & he said he was doing fine, just to work on his eye muscles with some exercises. However, because of our family history of lazy eyes, astigmatism, horrible eye sight, etc, he recommend the boys be seen yearly from age 2 on. I was wearing glasses at 15 mos, so I plan to be vigilant with their eye exams so we can spot any problems early on. I believe, at this point, we can now just call & schedule an eye exam through our eye clinic (without going through the Ped), but that's our insurance & it may vary on different plans.

If you have any concern, I'd get it checked. Better safe than sorry!

Our optomitrist said the Infant See program is good through at 2. I think why not take advantage of it?

I took mine in at 3 yrs old because of family history of bad eye sight. I have had glasses since I was 2 yrs old and my 3 older children also have had eye issues. I took them to my opthomologist. Plus Jayden had to have the tear duct surgery and was still having alot of leakage from that eye. Luckily it was a great appointment and both boys have perfect vision !
I cant see where it would hurt. I just wanted to make sure my boys were seeing as good as they could .. I know how miserable I am without my glasses because everything is blurry and if my boys vision was blurry I wanted to have it corrected for them ASAP. I felt so relieved to know that they could see just fine. :)
