Dd has a bad cold. She has coughing, congestion and a runny nose but no fever. I know I have read on here to put Vicks Vapor rub on the baby's feet and then put socks or feetie pjs on at night since they are too little to have it be used on the chest and back. So I went out to get some and got Vicks Baby Rub. It says to use on babies 3 months and older on their chest and back. Even though it says it, I am still nervous to do that especially since they are preemies. What would you do?

Vicks baby rub is perfectly safe. It doesn't have any of the harmful (to babies) ingredients that the adult formula has. We learned this when Cody got into a tub of it. How he got to it is beyond us. He stuck his finger deep into the tub and decided to eat some of it. I was at work so DH called poison control to see if we needed to do anything - They said that if he ate a lot (which he didn't) that it might give him a tummy ache, but that it was indeed safe. So this is how we learned that it was perfectly safe.

As a side note... he had very fresh breath for a few hours.

If you want to be certain, check with the pediatrician. Or you could use the ones they have now that plug into the wall, they have inserts that go into a plug in you can put by the frib, but our of reach that work well too.

Good luck, having sick youngs ones is no fun. I know I always want to take what ever they have on myself!

Those plug ins work sooo well. We use them whenever our kids get colds and they sleep through the night with no coughing when we use those!! I also use Dimetapp cold & allergy. I know a lot of people don't use cold meds anymore, this is not one of the ones that was recalled. I use it mostly for my older ones but I have used it for M&M too.

    Good luck!

I just used the Vick's Babyrub on my two a few weeks ago when they were coughing. I asked the pharmacist about using the vapor rub instead since they were almost 2, but she said the babyrub would be better, it has no menthol in it. The Vick's babyrub is fine to use, mine were preemies too and I did rub it on their chests.

It's the Camphor in the adult version that can irritate little skin. My problem was the baby version didn't seem to work very well. I would put the adult version on ME when they had a cold since we co-slept and I nursed them through the night.

There's also baby bath with "Vick's" in it. It alwasy seeme to loosen stuff up for my kids.
My husband & I were both raised getting slathered in the stuff & use it on our kiddos as well. (Age appropriate, of course) In fact, I think last night every person in my house went to be with a little!!
