I was just wondering how you have handled (or not handled for that matter), being in public places (or even at home sometimes) when you have your period? For the first time yesterday, I took the girls to Friendly's and had to use the bathroom with my period. I usually have the girls inside the bathroom stall with me (I'm paranoid about kidnapping) but I didn't want or feel comfortable discussing with the girls, why I had red stuff coming out of me or why I was sticking something up my VV. I just didn't think they would understand or are ready to have that discussion. At home, the girls often watch me when I go to the bathroom (I'm trying to get them into PTing) but when I have to take care of my period business, I often close the door and say I need privacy. Yesterday at Friendly's I had them stand right outside of the bathroom stall (which was fine for them because they are afraid of the loud sound of public toilets LOL) but I was wondering if any of you have thought about this issue and how you have dealt with it, especially with older toddlers who are very curious and ask a lot of questions.

    Thanks

If my 5 year old DS is in the bathroom with me out in public (or busting in on me at home, lol) - I just tell him that I need a minute of privacy and to please look the other way. He quickly turns around and continues talking my ear off!

I had my two walk in on me and then had them tell DH that I wear a diaper. <_< They still do mention it every so often but not much. They've asked me what that is and I just sort of distract them with something else. I don't know what to tell them and I don't want to freak Angie out by saying it's something that happens to woman. I can see the tears!

I had to deal with this once, with Ella when we were at Wal Mart. I asked her for privacy and to turn around in the stall, but of course she didn't.

Anyway - she asked what I was doing and I told her that I had to use that thing (tampon) ;) because when a girl gets older, like way older I told her, this is what happens that helps them have babies. That seemed to satisfy her and she hasn't brought it up since.

I usually ask them to turn and face the door as I need privacy. On ocassion if its a very small bathroom I let them stand outside the stall but I have to see their feet under the door.

Too funny!! I could totally see my two doing this to me. I haven't had to have that talk yet, so I am glad to see the responses.

I told my two the same thing my mom told me when I was little. Sometimes mommy's bleed when they go to the bathroom. I know it's not a complete or entirely accurate answer but they left it at that, so I did too. They were like 3 or a little younger when I told them that and they've never brought it up again.

I try not to let them see me doing tampons or whatever. They sometimes see the string, and I think maybe once have asked me about it, and I just said, "That's a thing for grown-up ladies; you don't need to know about it yet." Fortunately, that was enough for them.

Yeah, I've gotten the diaper thing before. I can't wear tampons anymore since giving birth, they hurt for some reason and I've tried every brand. Anyway, I have to wear pads so I got asked why I had a diaper in my underwear. I said sometimes ladies have to wear them because they bleed, but I'm OK, it just happens. I do try to get them to turn around though if we're out in public.

At least one of my boys usually follows me in the bathroom although I always tell them I need private time  They have decided that my tampon is actually a string cheese and cannot figure out why I have it in the bathroom with me  But I do not feel the need to tell them what it actually is. I just say Yes, it's string cheese, now please close the door!!

I told my girls that I had a boo-boo inside my tummy and that I needed to stick a band-aid in there and that the tampon was sort of like a band-aid. I just sort of keeping my fingers crossed that I don't find them in their rooms trying to shove band-aids in their nooks and crannies.

In my house I never close the door...never did. My Mom hated that and DH is used to it now hahaha and after 10 years he "can" pee with my beeing there :D . Only when we have guests I will lock the door
    The kids will follow me.
If I have my period I say that Mommy sometimes bleeds. Berber will say now..Mommy has a booboo.
    Not a big deal here

I just tell them matter of factly that I have my period and explain it simply. They don't seem to think it's any big deal (maybe because I don't think it is). I haven't yet had to discuss it in a public restroom, though.
