we just got back from our level 2 sono and found out and were so excited to finally find out what we were having. while we're there of course, the doctor comes in and is concerned. baby a is right about the pubic bone and is positioned face-down. she said that the head is measuring a little larger than normal and it's round. she also said she saw some fluid in my little man's kidneys and this can all be markers of down syndrome. im freaking out and am trying to celebrate but cant help but cry and be a nervous wreck. she said my blood test came back normal (1 in 27,000) for the nuchal fold and that i should consider an amnio to rule out downs.
she also added that because of the position of the baby, its hard to get great measurements. she got 3 and even the smallest measurement was a bit large. she said the nasal bone and heart looked great.

any experience or advice? im freaking out. :(

well no real advice-but I feel your fear and worry. Our level one results came back negative and our level 2 ultra sound all looked normal, but my blood results from that came back "positive" which means that its not truly downs but my percentage is 1 in 149- but after the sono the dr changed it to 1 in 249 since all the measurements on the head were normal.

I of course freaked out-but we opted no to the amino since it wouldn't change anything.

I have no advice to share, only that I understand how you feel.

Thinking of you and your babes.

    Yikes.

We had the AFP test done and came back 1 in 220 for abnormalities, but the u/s have been almost perfect ( except for baby B being 2 weeks behind his brother ). That doesnt mean i have stopped silently freaking out about it though. It stays in the back of my mind as a possibility considering i'm over 35. We just cross our fingers and pray things will be fine. We also opted not to do the amnio since what will be, will be.

Considering the position of your baby and that measurements may not be accurate, i'd wait till the next one before breaking down over it. It might just be a miscalculation.

I feel our pain. We had our nuchal u/s at 11 weeks or so with the boys. When the results came back, my OB called me and I ended up hysterical on the phone-at work! Baby A was fine. Baby B had a 1 in 49 chance of having Down Syndrome. Percentage wise=98% he was fine, 2% he was not. We declined any further testing until the big u/s to see if there were any other markers. As far as taking other tests(amnio, CVS), the results were not going to change anything anyways, which is why we ended up opting not to have them done.

Fast forward to 18 weeks and I was relieved that we would finally get answers. Nope. Instead, we got a "his femur is short." Ya, so? Well-that's a marker for Down Syndrome as well. Again-we declined the testing. I looked at my DH who is 5'4" and figured genetics had to play in this somehow! They never got a clear look at the heart-as we went back every 4 weeks.

Honestly-we didn't know anything until he was born. He was born perfect in every way. Those tests I do not believe in. Not to mention, the positioning of the baby seems like it is really difficult to get good measurements. I would take what they say with a grain of salt. And, FWIW-my Anthony(Baby B) has a large head. And like I said-he's perfectly healthy! Good luck to you! In the end, I think it's more the Dr's covering their behinds...

I haven't had my level II yet, but my doctor specifically told me ahead of time: "now when you go to the Peri, remember that they are high risk doctors. they will be looking for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. I have had them tell my patients many times that such and such was measuring small and it might be down syndrome...and to be completely honest, I've never delivered a Downs baby. That's not to say it's not possible, but try to not worry too much about it. It's all averages and every baby grows differently. So try to take it all with some level of a grain of salt."

I know it's easier said than done, and I am half nervous about my own appointment in a few weeks, but hang in there and know that lots of people get scary reports and end up with nothing to worry about after all!
