I was wondering.....when does the risk of a vanishing twin go down?

For the past two weeks, I have guarded my heart, afraid that we would lose one or both of the babies. I have a SCH (subchorionic hemotoma) and was bleeding for an entire week. Finally the bleeding let up Sunday night, down to almost nothing.

We went for an ultrasound today. Our first ultrasound showed Baby A with a heartrate of 106, and today, six days later, it's 133. Baby B had a 111 hr, and today it's up to 141. The SCH is smaller, thank goodness.

I'm 6w6d today. Baby A measures 6w4d, Baby B 6w5d. Both babies look cozy and comfy :) side by side (in different sacs), their little hearts beating strong.

    Those are some great heartbeats!
As with the possibility of miscarriage, the risk for vanishing twin normally decreases substantially by the end of your first trimester.
Given those nice strong heartbeats though I'd say your chances of carrying both babies are highly optimistic :)

    :welcome: to Twinstuff!

The risk goes way down once you see heartbeats. Congrats!! I too had a SCH at 6 weeks. Scary, scary. But in the end, I got 2 big boys. Best of luck to you for a healthy 9 months!!!

I agree with girls about heartbeats! It is a great sign!!
My twins had a week difference in size until about 11 weeks old gestational age and then the smaller one catch up! So, couple of days difference is no big deal, they were always couple of days different through out the whole pregnancy.

I know it is hard, I worried so much, I did not let myself get excited until they were born, and that was a mistake, i was less prepared because i never expected a positive outcome to the pregnancy. please enjoy your pregnancy, and prepare yourself for big fun in 8 months.

CONGRATS. Looks like we will be close to each other. Here are my stats
    My 1st u/s:
    A was 6wk 4day HB was 115
    B was 6wk 1day HB was 105

The next week I had another u/s
    A measured 7wk 2 day HB was 143
    B measured 7wk 1 day HB was 135

I asked my OB the same question and he said my risk was down to 25% for vanishing twin. I am now 9wks. I have another u/s this afternoon.

Thanks so much everyone! I'm not worried about their size, the ultrasound was done on the abdomen (and I am a bit "fluffy") and I don't think we got as clear a picture of them as we did last week with the internal ultrasound.

We are coming fresh off of a 2nd trimester loss (just this past June). Our son died due to an umbilical cord accident. I think, even if this pregnancy was a singleton, I would be very guarded. Since yesterday's ultrasound, I have a feeling of calm & peace, like everything is going to be okay. :)

Hayden, your babies heart rates are so similar to mine! I wonder if we will have the same sex babies? Let us know how today's appointment goes!

Hi Jenny & Hayden...I am also due in May and am paranoid about a vanishing twin.

    My history:

    1st ultrasound @ 5 weeks 6 days
Baby A: HB 103 measuring right on time
Baby B: sack noted, no heatbeat

    2nd ultrasound @ 6 weeks 6 days
    Baby A: HB 133
    Baby B: HB 99

    3rd ultrasound @ 7 weeks 6 days
    Baby A: HB 163
Baby B: HB 153 (he caught up!!)

final ultrasound withfetility specialist tomorrow at 8 weeks 4 days...I pray both babies are doing okay.

I cant wait for the first trimester to be over...I am a nervous wreck!!! :rotflmbo:

That was why I included them. I thought the same thing!!! I am so sorry about your loss. I think the worry can begin with kids frmo the moment we see + preg test! ((HUGS))

Sounds like Baby B caught up nicely :D Let us know how the appointment goes tomorrow!

The first trimester is awful, I'm counting down the days until I'm out of it!

You had your u/s a little earlier than mine, but they all sound wonderful! I had another u/s today and they were
    A - 8wks 5days HB 162
    B - 9wks 4days HB 178

B passed A I was shocked. My dr told me after my 7wk u/s the vanishing twin part was down to 25%

Can't wait to hear about your new u/s

Hey all, I'm new here and apparently don't have priveledges yet to start a new topic so I thought I'd piggy back on to this one. I had my first OB appointment on Thurs the 15th. They did an ultrasound because I was having some spotting and found out we are having twins! We were so shocked but pleased. My older sister has identical twin daughters.
My question is this....they got a heart rate of 120 on both babies at 6 weeks 3 days. Does the chance of experiencing vanishing twin syndrome go down after you get good heart rates? I am so apprehensive because I just had a miscarriage in June.

Also how many of you experienced spotting this early? Its not red any more...now brown but its still there every time I wipe. Trying to not let myself get discourged...

    Thanks all!

That sounds great to me. Those were higher heartbeats than my twins at the same time. Good luck!
