Vanishing twin dx- can they be wrong?

Four weeks ago, at 7 weeks, 1 day, I went in for my first prenatal visit and found out I was expecting twins. Both babies had a heartbeat and measured almost the same. Today, I went in and had another in office ultrasound. One baby had grown well and had a heartbeat. The other sac was much smaller and there was something there but they didn't take a close look. The doctor came in and said that it was the fetal pole. He said it was Vanishing Twin Syndrome. I see a perinatologist in two weeks. The OB said that all traces of the twin would be gone by then.

Could they be wrong? There was a marked difference between babies, but they didn't even look at the smaller one. Has anyone had a mistaken diagnosis or heard of it? I am not trying to hang on to false hope, just wondering if there was any reason to hope.

My poor kids are devastated and my ds12 wants a second opinion. We were all so excited.

    Thanks.

Hugs to you!! I am not sure about if they could be wrong. I am sure there is that possibility...just wanted to let you know that I, too, was devastated with my first pregnancy when I learned at 9 weeks that one had vanished after just seeing BOTH heartbeats at 7 weeks. Keep us posted

Its possible and if baby IS still there they will be able to peak at it at your peris office... they are much MUCH more thorough then the OB... hang in there :youcandoit:

I don't want you to give up hope. I can't say I've experienced that miracle. I think the reason they didn't look is because they don't want you to see, trust me it's hard to look at. That was my experience. Had two strong heartbeats at 8 wks and one at twelve. You could still see Baby B but he was considerable smaller than A and there was no bloodflow or heartbeat. That was the hardest because I could still see him. At my 20wk U/S Baby B had finally vanished. I had no signs, no spotting or anything. It just happened. It was hard for all parties involved but I can give you this one glimmer...Josiah (Baby A) is fine now. No adverse affects that we can see and I am going on with this pregnancy with Jacob (Baby B) in our hearts and mind, blessed that we still have our lil miracle to look forward to. Hugs to you, I pray it works out for you.

I had a friend who just had her twin vanish. So sorry, that must be hard. Hope either way it goes, you will be able to find peace with it.

More people these days are experiencing vanishing twins because of early ultrasounds. I was pregnant with twins (my 2nd pregnancy) which we discovered at 8 weeks. One however was a full week behind the other, although they both had heartbeats. Two weeks later I was only pregnant with one, no sign of two. I did ask at ever ultrasound I had after that if they were sure it was only one. I was measuring ahead of schedule and carried extra fluid, so I was plenty big.
I imagine it could happen. I'm surprised they didn't do any measurements.

 I'm sorry. Please let us know what happens. I do firmly believe though, once a twin mom, always a twin mom.
