DH and I are major procrastinators...so we are just trying to plan a last vacation now. we are looking at going away in mid to late February - and I will be 26 - 28 weeks. Am I crazy? Our current options include a trip from NYC to Florida, or to Cabo San Lucas (6 hr flight).

    BTDT? Any thoughts?

    Thanks

Don't expect to do a ton of walking is my only advice :) Already at that stage I was having trouble breathing after a grocery shopping trip, and after an afternoon of shopping my ankles and feet are very swollen :)

Otherwise, get your ob's okay and it shouldn't be a problem. :)

My peri advised no travel after 24 weeks. Give your doctor a call and find out what she thinks before you book anything. I would have been fine with a relaxing trip to lay on the beach at 26 weeks but probably wouldn't have been up for any sightseeing or major walking.

Personally, I was uncomfortable by 26 weeks(measuring about 34 weeks with singleton), and by 28 was on bedrest.

I was advised no flying after 20 weeks my first pregnancy (twins) and 24 weeks my second pregnancy. I would definitely talk to your doctor before planning anything. It's not going to be an easy trip for you.

I don't want to cause alarm but I was told it would be ok at that time BUT....

I flew the 10+ hours from Madrid back to Brasil to spend time with my family before christmas. Well, now I'm going to give birth here...not in Madrid as planned... where our home is..ect. Iberia, the airline, allows flights up to 28 weeks without consent and reccomends you don't fly after 32 weeks with twins. I was 27 weeks upon returning to Brasil 30 weeks when I was told by a doctor in Floripa, that i may not want to risk another flight. Our babies are still doing well and in my country so at least we will have immediate help.
DH is very nervous about the situation. He had to return to Madrid for a short time last week and thought I would need an emergency c-section while he was away.
Worse for him, the airport in Madrid SHUTDOWN for several hours friday and his flight was cancelled. Wonderful management of Iberia  ...he finally was able to fly out Sunday.

I would check with your ob... I asked her about travel and she didn't have a problem with it.. But on the other, i tried to go camping at 28 weeks and my Peri said no go to that. She said that she didn't like her patients to go anywhere without access to a lvl 3 nicu after viablility..

Hi, I live in Ohio and flew to Florida when I was 29-30 weeks. I had to get permision from my OB and as long as my cervix was ok she was ok with it. I was a little uncomfortable on the plane and got up a few times to just walk up and down the isle to avoid blood clots in my legs. Take all of your med papers and the emergency number for your OB. It was a really nice break from life before it was turned upside down with twins!!! Enjoy your trip if you decied to go!

I was TOLD not to go anywhere after 20 weeks… not kidding… he didn’t want me more than an hour away from his hospital… but that could also be when I was 20 w prego w/ first DS I went to Paris and got food poisoning from the Jules Vern restaurant in the Eiffel tower… I was throwing up, fainting AND running to the bathroom ever 15 min… lost 15 pounds in a week… luckily on the flight home the airline gave me a whole row… we won’t get into how I fainted, landed on a heel of a boot (those big chunky wooden heels were in then) and had a black eye for my sister wedding the week after… yeah good times walking down the isle pregnant w/ a black eye :drinks: …

I traveled to and from Europe at 24-26 weeks and that was the last trip I made. We were considering NM from Chicago at 28 weeks but even though I felt fine, I was a little uncomfortable about it.

I traveled to Hawaii from California at 27 weeks. I got permission from my OB and tried to get up and walk around on the plane every hour. On the flight back home I got extremely swollen!!! I couldn't do much walking so DH had to pull the car up to wherever we were and pick me up. That was actually kind of nice :) I'm sure this had nothing to do with it, but by week 30, I was on bed rest w/ extreme IUGR.

I am flying from NY to Florida at 20 weeks and my OB was fine with that, but he said that any later could be a problem. I just asked today about driving to Lake George for a few days when I am 24 weeks and he told me that it would all depend on my U/S results and whether any issues have developed. He also told me that I need to clear any future travel with him. As long as things are going well he doesn't have a problem with it, but he wants to evaluate me pre-trip.

I would talk to your Dr.

I traveled at 16-18 weeks and then was on bedrest at 21....my OB had initially said no travellign after 24 weeks unless neccasary and only to locations w/ a NICU.

It will depend. Most single pregnancies cant travel after 32 weeks on planes....so I would think if you are even close to measuring aroudn 32 weeks they would not suggest it. The pressrue changes on a flight can do strange things, and you are more likely to get dehydrated.

I would not do it. I traveled at 17-19 weeks and that was perfect -- my digestive/intestinal system had settled down after the first tri, but I was not yet huge and uncomfortable. I noticed a huge increase in discomfort between, say, 22 and 26 weeks. I was put on modified bedrest at 29 weeks.

If you really must plan a vacation, I'd strongly suggest doing it by car (so you can stop as needed) and also choosing somewhere less than 3 hours from your home, and somewhere that has a good hospital fairly nearby, just in case.

you have lots of responses, but i wanted to add mine 2 cents. i wouldn't do it. I'm in NYC too, we traveled 4 hrs to St. Thomas at 22w and was fine. By Christmas (26w) we took the train to Baltimore and was uncomfortable and just wanted to be home. There's nothing like sleeping in your own bed at this point (I'm 29w now).

I've been to Cabo, not a place I'd want to deliver a baby should something go wrong, plus, there are no direct flights last time I checked, which would be a major pain. The best thing about St. Thomas was the direct flight.

I would be concerned with flying out of the country, god forbid something happens at least when your with in the US you know where to seek good medical treatment. Mexico doesnt have the greatest medical resources.

A last-minute vacation can be fun! Since you'll be pregnant, maybe consider a shorter flight like NYC to Florida instead of Cabo San Lucas. It might be more comfortable for you. And if you need help finding deals, checking out skiplagged reviews could give you some good tips on flights. Just relax and enjoy your trip!
