My twins were conceived through IVF. I just had my 8 week u/s and it was kind of a bad appointment. <_< . My RE was busy because he's been off for 2 weeks so he was in a rush and didn't really have time to spend with us or talk to us, and we didn't get any details. He said the embryos looked good and heartbeats sounded strong but he didn't tell us the rates or sizes or anything. What he did say is that I have a hematoma above one of the sacs. He said that I should just stop taking the baby aspirin (I'm still taking progesterone and estradiol) and know that I might bleed a little in the next few days. He said it can lead to miscarriage but that it usually doesn't.

Should I worry? Has any one else had a hematoma that resolved itself? How long did it take? I have another appointment next week (hopefully my last with this doctor!).

    Thanks!

I had the exact same thing happen. I did bleed for several weeks - it was on and off. My babies were conceived through IVF also.
It was as scary time - but my dr just told me not to lift ANYTHING and not to stand more than 2 hours at a time. My bleeding would get worse if I had been up and out and about and if I was sitting around it would get better sometimes the blood was just old brownish and there were times it was red. FINALLY after a couple of weeks I put myself on bedrest for about 3 days and I never had another problem with it. I am not sure if that did the trick or if it was just time for it to stop but it did! My girls will be 2 on Saturday!!

CONGRATULATIONS on your sweet little ones!!!!!!!

I did not personally BUT, my best girlfriend did and she now has a healthy happy baby boy born in Oct!
Her doctor told her that they can be quite common. Try not to worry.

On a side note, my friend had some spotting and went in. They did an u/s and found that the hematoma had gone and that was the cause for the spotting. Baby was obviously fine though.

Hematoma is a bruise. Fancy word but not much to worry about.

I started spotting at week seven and went to the ER thinking I was having a miscarriage. The Dr. ordered an ultrasound and they found the twins (I was so relieved and so surprised). They also found a subchorionic hematoma and said that is what was causing the spotting. I did some research and it turns out that subchorionic hematomas are more common in twin pregnancies. I found that I could pretty much control the spotting by drinking plenty of water (which is super important in pregnancy anyway)! If I were you I would ask for a follow up ultrasound in a few weeks if you are not already scheduled for one (just for peace of mind), and ask the Dr. if there are any restrictions on activity you should be following. I am sure everything will work out just fine. :D

I have one with these guys. I was spotting on and off at the beginning but my RE thought that it was just because we're having twins. They were growing on schedule and had strong heartbeats so we were told not to worry. Then less than a week after he released me, I woke up gushing blood. I thought for sure that we had lost the babies and we rushed to the ER. Fortunately the U/S showed two strong heartbeats and revealed the hemotoma. I saw my OB the next morning and he told me that this is really really common in pregnancy. It is associated with a 1% increase in miscarriage rates, but in his practice he had never had someone lose a baby due to it. I was put on modified activity for a few days and told to drink tons of water until the bleeding stopped.

I had an ultrasound on Dec 6th to measure the hemotoma and I go back on Jan 6th to check it. Mine is between the membranes of the babies, which is apparently a strange place for it, and not very big. This next ultrasound will hopefully show it smaller or gone. Most resolve on their own by 20 weeks so I am really hoping mine is gone on Tues. I've been told that as long as it isn't growing, it's no longer really an issue.

I had one too. I bled so much at 6 weeks I thought I was having a MC. Turns out I was having twins! I had another big bleed about 12 weeks and that was it. I had no issues whatsoever from the subchorionic hematoma. I have read that it is very common with twins and for some reason they see more when you do IVF-maybe due to the increase in hormones. Hang in there, it can be scary.

I too had a hematoma. I discovered mine at 7 weeks 3 days when I started bleeding so heavily with a clot the size of my hand (sorry tmi). I too conceived via IVF. I thought for sure I was having a miscarriage. The hematoma I think measured around 2 inches. I bled heavily for nearly 3 weeks and then had spotting. The hematoma was undetectable by 12 weeks and everything is great! Try not to worry too much and stay off your feet. I know I was completely freaking out when I was going through this, but from what I gather, it's very common.
