So I had my ultrasound yesterday, both babies are growing! Baby A is 1 lb 9 oz and Baby B is 1 lb 15 oz. So they've put on 8 and 9 oz in the 2 weeks. Both have lots of fluid and were very active.

Then the u/s tech did the vaginal part to check my cervix (and to measure Baby B's head which seemed to be lodged in my pelvis!) and my cervix was only 20mm. They asked me to wait while they called my OB, and after a very anxious hour, a perinatalogist came to see me. She said my doctor would call with more details but basically they are concerned about preterm labour and I should head straight home and rest and not work starting NOW.

This was totally unexpected as I've been feeling good and have had no complications so far. I was really worried and upset. Got home to a message from my OB wanting to see me right away. MORE stress. Went to his office for 6pm, and he basically said it's time to stop work, stay in bed/lying down as much as possible, and try to keep the babies healthy and IN the uterus for as long as possible. He said babies are looking great from the u/s but that I would be switching to a perinatalogist at another hospital that is better equipped to deal with preterm babies. I also went to the hospital for a steriod injection and have another today.

So I'm looking at weeks..months of being at home and not being able to do anything. I have had quite a few offers of help so I know I'm lucky. And my work was very surprised as my maternity leave wasn't supposed to start until December, and they are scrambling to replace me, but they were nice about it and expressed their best wishes for mine and the babies health.

I feel almost in shock about such a sudden turn of events! Everything was great 2 weeks ago at my last ultrasound, I've been working full time, taking care of the house, walking the dog, doing all my normal stuff and suddenly this happens! Trying to organize myself today and figure out the who's and what's to get everything taken care of that I can't do myself.

Thank you so much for the support of the wonderful ladies on here. I feel much better informed about what's going on, and reassured by your experiences. I really appreciate it!

I'm sorry for the sudden change! I am going through this pregnancy with the realization tha at some point I will be told to stay home, because no matter what eventually I won't be able to drive since I'm so short and almost couldn't with a singleton pregnancy.

Thank goodness you got so many offers of help! I have some friends who are SAHMs and I'm praying they can visit occasionally and make it easier for me when I'm home.

:grouphug: bedrest is vry daunting and can frustrate you. But its best to do what the Dr says you should do. Remeber its not about you, its about those two precious little ones you are carrying inside of you.
I went int preterm labour at 26 weeks and ended up in the same postion as you are now. It awfull as you feel ok, and get frustrated, until my obgyn told me its not about me, its aobut the babies. then i calmed down and relaxed and enjoy.

so take it easy, enjoy the bedrest, you are going to miss it when the twins are here, ask any mom on this board   .

You sure will!!!! The same thing happened to me! working one day with freedom to what I wanted (except sex but that is a whole nother thread LOL!) , bedrest with no warning the next (at 28weeks) Oh it was an adjustment! I looked forward to each dr appointment like I was a kid going to Disney Land!! Now I do wish I had enjoyed it more and just taken one day at a time! keep your computer close, your tv on, a good book around, your phone and lots to eat and drink by your side. I was on bedrest for 10 weeks. One day when your babies are almost 4, you will be able to look back and the weeks that you stay on bedrest now will not only be so worth it but a tiny blip in time.. CONGRATULATIONS on your babies!!

I just wanted to let you know that this exact same thing happened to me at about the same time. I was 27 weeks, went in for my normal appt and everything was great but I was starting to dilate, I was at a full 1 and my doc put me on immediate bed rest. I couldn't even go back to work the next day and my work had not gotten someone to fill in for me and I was totally stressed about that. I had to get the steriod shots, etc. I just want you to know that it's not going to be that bad!! It might seem like it's going to be forever and sometimes it'll feel that way but do your best to stay off your feet and rest because trust me you won't get this opportunity to rest again for a really long time :) I got home that night from my appt and I cried for like an hour and then I tried to put it behind me and deal with what I had to. I made it to 34 weeks and we only spent 9 days in the NICU. I also had to be on a iv pump to stop contractions, I had them pretty bad since 27 weeks as well. Anyway, good luck to you and just hang in there and take advantage of this time to relax.

The same thing happened to me. My cervix was at 36mm at 24 weeks and then at 26 weeks it went to 1.9. I went from OB office straight to the hospital for observation and bed rest. They put me on procardia and kept me over night. They repeated the ultrasound the next day and the peri said it was 2.48. He said the cervix is dynamic and can shorten and lengthen. They sent me home on modified bed rest and I saw my Ob the next week and the repeat u/s showed above 2 and he checked my cervix and was firm and closed. I continue to be more conservative than they are telling me to be. I hardly leave the house and spend my days on the couch reclined as much as possible. My OB has been doing FfN tests and they have been negative. That is reassuring that I know I have such a small chance of delivering before 29 weeks and that I am not dilating. Know that your cervix could lengthen again with the rest and you could continue on with out issue!! Are you contracting? Did they put you on procardia to keep contractions from coming? I am not on strict bed rest (yet) but have been there with a previous preg. I was only allowed to be up to use the bathroom and shower every other day. It is hard at first but then all of a sudden it is over and you can't believe you did it! Take the help offered to you as that will help relieve some of the stress of being home but not being able to do anything. I have my repeat u/s today and am also nervous that my cervix may have shortened again. Please keep us posted as to how you are doing! :youcandoit:

I'm sorry to hear about your turn of events. Please don't worry about work. I did, and it wasn't worth it!

My cervix dropped to 6 mm at 23 wks and 6 days. I wasn't eligible for a cerclage (did they discuss this with you?). I had the steroid shots and was on strict bed rest for 12 weeks. We made it to 36 weeks, thankfully (and about 11 weeks longer than my Dr. thought I would make it).

I found bed rest difficult because I had too much time to worry! I've heard netflix is good to keep yourself busy. I was on the internet a lot, and watched hulu.com.

Hang in there. I'm sure you can do it! Take care.

Good luck, bedrest is hard. I did it for 6 weeks and you wikll hopefully have even longer. Relax, the stress isn't good for the babies either. Keep them in and baking as long as possible. Keep us posted.

I haven't had any contractions, or at least nothing I noticed. And I'm not on any meds, other than the steroid shot I got yesterday. I go for another ultrasound in a week when I'll meet my new doctor so I'll rest up and see what happens.

No one mentioned cerclage, but I am seeing a perinatalogist next week so I have no idea what they'll say. The high risk clinic is at a different hospital. That is awesome that you kept your babies in so long, way to go!

I understand the suddenness of it all I found out I was having twins and needed to go on bedrest all on the same day! Hope the bedrest works and you can keep them in for those months. I was on bedrest for 10 weeks

    Hi there,

I just thought I'd let you know that I can sympathize completely since I went through almost exactly the same thing this week. Last friday i went for a routine ultrasound and my cervix had shortened from over 3cm to 2.5 and I was told to stop work immediately. It was a surprise for me, but my work was very understanding. I've also had pretty steady contractions for the last 6-8 weeks and monday these got a lot worse (every 5min steady and fairly intense), so I went in to the hospital. Anyways, long story short, I just got home yesterday, I had the steroid shots and am now lying on the couch full time. Needless to say all of this is a shock for someone who was commuting 20km by bike 4 months ago :p

Anyways, it is nice to hear all of the encouraging stories and if you ever need to vent, I'll be here (literally right here, on the couch :) )
